Fatal accident on i 20 today 2022

IN BRIEF: A crash on Interstate 20 westbound, just after the West Avenue exit, or exit 80, in Rockdale County has at least three lanes blocked off. Traffic is backed up at least to Ga. Highway 138. Deputies and first responders are on the scene; no fatalities reported. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes. 

ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46) - A crash involving multiple vehicles shut down several lanes of Interstate 20 westbound on Wednesday afternoon at around 4:30 p.m.

The Georgia State Patrol says it all started when troopers spotted a stolen vehicle. They say the driver made a U-turn when the troopers turned on their lights and began driving westbound in the eastbound lanes. The driver’s car then struck two vehicles, causing one to overturn. Six innocent travelers were injured but no serious injuries were reported.

The driver ran away from the scene and has not yet been located.

ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) - DPS has confirmed with CBS7 that an accident on I-20 has shut down Westbound lanes at mile marker 105.

CBS7 is also working to get information on a second accident on I-20 that is causing the Eastbound lanes to reach a standstill.

According to DPS, an 18-wheeler rear-ended a vehicle in the westbound lanes and then crashed through the median and into the eastbound lanes causing a four-vehicle chain-reaction crash.

5 people were hospitalized, two critical.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes have opened back up

the crash is still under investigation.

MIDLAND COUNTY, Texas (KOSA) - A fatal crash occurred on September 16, 2022 at around 6 a.m. in Midland County.

According to DPS, the investigation revealed that 26-year-old Crissean Niceyea Butler from Midland was traveling eastbound on I-20 North Service Road near mile marker 146.

Butler failed to drive in a single lane and exited the roadway to the south causing the car to roll over.

He later died on the scene due to his injuries.

THOMSON, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A person was killed Monday morning in a crash on Interstate 20 involving a pickup and a tractor-trailer.

The victim was identified as 71-year-old Carl Forss, of Watkinsville.

It happened just before 9:40 a.m. on the westbound side near the Cobbham Road exit just east of Thomson, according to authorities.

A witness reported that “a truck was literally embedded in the back of a semi.”

The McDuffie County Coroner’s Office said Forss was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:53 a.m.

Two of the three lanes were blocked for a time, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. By noon, the semi and the pickup had been moved to the side of the road and all lanes had reopened. However, traffic was backed up for a couple of miles.

Agencies on the scene included the McDuffie County Sheriff’s office, GDOT, Georgia State Patrol, Raysville Fire Department, McDuffie Fire Rescue, Georgia Department of Public Safety and Warren County Sheriff’s Office.

I-20 crash heading eastbound  

 UPDATE: The Aiken County Coroner's Office was called onto the scene of one of the crashes. One person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Coroner's Office released the name of the victim. They say 21-year-old Leeanna M. Windnagle of Augusta was killed this morning in the crash that occurred in the westbound lane of I-20. Officials say Windnagle was a restrained passenger in the backseat of a van. The driver of the van lost control vehicle after their rear tire blew out. The vehicle exited the left side of the interstate and collided with a tree. Several passengers were transported to the hospital and one was in critical condition. 

Authorities say Windnagle's body will be autopsied in Newberry, SC on Friday, Jan. 3.
