How many ounces of ground coffee per cup

Earlier this month we talked about how to grind coffee beans for an amazing cup of coffee, but today we want to discuss how much ground coffee you should be using per cup.

Just as it’s important to make sure your coffee grounds are the right consistency, it’s also important to make sure you’re using the right amount of coffee grounds. Using too much or too little can cause your coffee to lack flavor or be too bitter.

How Much Coffee is in a Cup?

Since Carta Coffee Merchants is located in the United States – Kona, Hawaii – let’s focus on measurements using the imperial system instead of the metric system.

In the United States, we measure cups using ounces. 8 fluid ounces equates to 1 cup, but that’s not necessarily the case when talking about a cup of coffee.

A cup of coffee is actually not 8 fluid ounces, like a measuring cup, but it’s actually 6 fluid ounces. This is the standard serving size for a cup of coffee in the US, despite the fact that a cup, when discussing unit of measure, is actually 8 ounces.

This can cause some confusion when trying to figure out how much ground coffee to use when making one cup of coffee but knowing that the standard serving size of a cup of coffee is 6 ounces will make it a lot easier to figure out how much ground coffee to use in your cup.

Coffee Grounds Per Cup of Coffee

Now that we know that a standard serving size of a cup of coffee is 6 ounces, let’s look at how much ground coffee you should use per cup.

We recommend using 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 fluid ounces of coffee for the best flavor and strength.

Most drip coffee makers will measure out the cups for you, with a cup being 6 ounces, but if you’re using something like a French press, or are doing the pour over method, you may want to fill your entire mug with coffee.

A typical coffee mug holds around 9-12 ounces, which is obviously more than what a standard coffeemaker considers a cup. You can easily adjust your water to coffee ground ratio by assuming that for every 3 ounces of water you want to use 1 tablespoon of ground coffee. So if you’re looking to fill up your entire mug and it holds 9 ounces, you would use 3 tablespoons, whereas a 12 ounce mug would use 4 tablespoons of coffee grounds.

If you’re using a drip coffee maker in your home, the instructions are usually clear about how much water and how much ground coffee to add depending on how many cups of coffee you wish to make. The trouble is when you move to other methods of coffee making that are not so automated in their brewing process.

Why the Coffee to Water Ratio is Important

It’s extremely important to make sure that you have your coffee to water ratio correct when making coffee. If you’re off by a little you may not notice the difference, or if you’re the type that adds a lot of cream and sugar to your coffee, it probably won’t make a difference. However, if you tend to drink your coffee black, or without sugar/cream, then you could end up with a bitter cup of coffee or a less than flavorful cup.

The right ratio of coffee to water is essential for a successful coffee preparation. A kitchen scale can help you to keep exact quantities. For those who don’t have kitchen scales at hand, we give helpful tips on how many grams of coffee fit on a spoon and how many spoons of coffee powder you need for one cup or one litre of filter coffee.

How to dose your coffee - without kitchen scales

For every 200 ml cup of coffee you need about one full tablespoon of coffee powder. If you want to make a whole litre of filter coffee at once, we recommend using seven tablespoons of ground coffee.

For the specification of the coffee quantities we have decided to use a fully heaped standard tablespoon (see 2nd photo). All specifications are for a filter coffee roast of medium grinding degree.

Tip: If you decide to always measure your coffee with measuring spoons, we recommend weighing the coffee portion per spoon once. That way you know how many grams of your favourite coffee fits on your spoon.

Coffee dosage for all preparers

The following table shows you the quantities of coffee required per brewer. Here, too, we assume full tablespoons (see 2nd photo above). For preparation in the French Press and the Bayreuth pot, grind your coffee a little coarser than for preparation in the hand filter. This way the coffee is extracted more evenly and tastes more nuanced.

When you get right down to it – think in grams!

The dosage of coffee powder always depends on the amount of coffee to be brewed. The Americans call this the „Brewing Ratio“, i.e. the ratio of coffee to water when brewing. The SCAE (Speciality Coffee Association of Europe) recommends using 60 grams of coffee per litre of water. For a cup size of 200 millilitres you therefore need twelve grams of coffee powder. This ratio should be taken as a guide that you can adjust to suit your taste.

For our own coffees, however, we recommend a slightly higher dosage so that their fine nuances of taste are better accentuated: For filter coffee we use about 65 grams of coffee per litre of water. We have summarised our recipe recommendations for all common coffee makers – you can print out the This Is How We Brew It poster and hang it up in your kitchen.

Unfortunately, most of the instructions supplied with coffee makers contain dosage information such as „two level spoons per cup“. Some coffee makers also include portioned spoons for dosage. When preparing really good coffee, the dosage information of this type is not accurate enough. We therefore advise you to prepare the coffee with the help of a coffee scale. It is a simple and practical tool that helps you to achieve a constant coffee quality – and besides the grams, it also measures another important factor: the extraction time.

That's how you simply dose with your kitchen scales

1 millilitre of water = 1 gram

  • Weigh the required amount of coffee beans and then grind your coffee fresh.
  • Place your coffee maker with the freshly ground coffee on the scale and tare it.
  • Pour the coffee water slowly and in small steps. The scale measures how much water you have already poured in. So you know when you can stop pouring – and when you have reached your optimum ratio of coffee to water.

What is the problem with imprecise quantities?

Coffee beans have a different structure: different coffee varieties have unalike shapes and sizes – in addition, the type of roasting also has an influence on the size of the beans.

In the picture you can see 200 grams of Indian Monsooned Malabar beans in the left glass, and 200 grams of our Limu beans the right one. As the Limu beans are denser, the right jar has to be filled less high to achieve the same weight. So if you measure your coffee beans with a portion spoon, the gram numbers will differ depending on the coffee bean, i.e. the amount of coffee powder.

How much ground coffee do I use per cup?

The standard ratio for brewing coffee is 1-2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 ounces of water – 1 tablespoon for lighter coffee and 2 for stronger coffee. That 6-ounce measure is equivalent to one “cup” in a standard coffeemaker, but keep in mind that the standard mug size is closer to 12 ounces or larger.

How much does 2 oz of ground coffee make?

Starbucks' Medium Roast Ground Coffee is 100% Arabica and contains one bag (12 oz) of beans. Each packet of coffee contains 2 ounces of ground and pre-measured coffee, yielding approximately 64 ounces of fresh brewed coffee or (8) 8 ounce cups of coffee, ensuring a consistent flavor without the need to measure.

How many oz of ground coffee is 4 cups?

How much coffee for four cups of coffee? Using the Golden Ratio, we know that if one cup takes 8.3g of coffee grounds, then 4 cups would need 33.2g. (The full calculation is that 5fl oz x 4 cups = 20fl oz which equates to 600ml, and 600/18 gives 33g).

How much coffee do I need for 8 cups of coffee?

For making 8 cups, we think 14 Tablespoons or ~80 grams of coffee is a good starting point. You may need to use more or less coffee, depending on your preferred coffee strength.
