Re: Power tilt fluid ATF substitute

I run Mercs and it says that either tranny fluid or Quicksilver (after market Merc marine products) is fine. Rule of thumb is that if the fluid in the reservoir is red, put in tranny fluid, if clear, QK PTT fluid. One would imagine that a third party makes the pumps for all marine applications so it it works for one, why shouldn't it work for another. They are doing the same job.

Re: Power tilt fluid ATF substitute

Picked up a new OMC tilt kit for my 55hp. I have read ATF is OK to use instead of OMC trim fluid. Does it matter what type of ATF? Type F , Dexron 3 / 5 or is power steering fluid better? I don't want the seals to disagree down the road. Who knows for sure?

Dexron 3 is what I've used for several years now with no ill effects whatsoever.

In stock.
Usually ships within 2 to 3 days.

Quicksilver power trim and steering fluid alternative

No power steering fluid is used. Alternative for the power steering is ATF.
"Quicksilver Power Trim and Steering Fluid or automatic transmission
fluid (ATF), Dexron, Dexron II or Dexron III."
Is the Mercruiser hydraulic fluid red like ATF? The stuff in my power steering was red, and I just topped it off with ATF.

For drive trim, "If quicksilver Power Trim and steering fluid is not available, SAE 10W-30
or 10W-40 engine oil can be used in the system."

Mercury/Quicksilver power trim and steering fluid is what the factory fills them with. My Seloc manual says 10-30 motor oil is ok to use, while my Clymer manual says Dexron atf is an ok substitute. Myself, I've been using any 5-30 motor oil I have handy for the last 12 years. I change it out every year, and add a splash of atf to it so I can see the level easier.

I use the Mercury or West Marine stuff. I've heard reasons not to use ATF or motor oil. Never one not to use the right stuff.

I have been told that the Mercury oil is 20 wt non detergent oil. I used ATF in the trim-tilt on our 115 outboard for years. When the seals melted the shop told me that the ATF did it. I don't know if I agree, as the thing was 28 years-old when the seals failed. I know for a fact that ATF will ruin the seals in automotive power steering units. Was it ATF, or was it OLD AGE? We may never know.

Either way, I used the Mercury stuff in both boats now. It's easier than ever and the prices are competetive since Wally World started selling Quicksilver products.

Can you use power steering fluid for boat trim?

You will be fine. If there is any change in the speed of the the tabs, that will be short lived until the fluids gets all mixed together. Chances are you won't notice any difference. ATF and power steering are pretty close in viscosity, 30wt motor oil is way more viscous.

What kind of fluid goes in tilt and trim?

An electric pump runs the hydraulic fluid in the power tilt and trim system, and if you get a leak, the hydraulic fluid will ooze out and allow air to replace it in the system. When that happens, the motor will usually tilt all the way down and will not go up or will stick.

What kind of fluid will work in Yamaha trim tilt?

Be sure to use a high-quality marine-formula grease, like Yamalube® Marine Grease, so it won't wash off so fast.

Can you use ATF in boat trim?

No problem "at all" Using ATF in your trim pump. Only reason they say that you can use ATF in a pinch is that they cannot sell you trim fluid for 10 times the price!
