Hey all. I have an 87 wrangler with a 4.2. I put a motorcraft 2150 from the ebay guy and its not dependable. Tired of messing with it. I was thinking about fuel injecting it. I know there is different ways of doing it but which one is best? Anyone ever try the Holley sniper kit? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum dsal,

Have you contacted the EBAY guy and asked him for advice?

What isn't dependable with the carb? What are the symptoms. Most folks that use them are pretty happy.

I've tried contacting hin. No response. Ive rebuilt it a couple times also. Runs good for a little bit then starts acting up. Ive had it bog on acceleration, it will stall some times, ive had the mixture screws back out . Its just one thing after another. Its a summer vehicle and I spend half the summer working on it. Also, its a Chinese casting so you cant get certain parts for it.

I can relate to your pain, I run a 2150 also, brand new, and I have adjusted it every which way, may need jets, I don't know. Mines not as bad as what you describe, mine just has the slow warm up time and stumble on pull out.

I did some research and i found that the jets he sent were too small. I put in bigger jets but then i broke the venturi screw. Couldn't get another because it was a chinese casting (metric) and i could only get a standard screw. I had one made at a machine shop but its too cold out to mess with it now.

I'm running a National Carburetors re-manufactured Carter BBD carb for about the past 4 years. No emissions where I live, so I got one without the problematic stepper motor.
Once I rejetted it for altitude it's been problem free. (I live at 6500').
Cheaper than converting to a MC2100 and WAY cheaper than converting to the Howel setup.
A HEI distributor eleminates the OE distributor for the most cost effective 4.2 ignition setup.

I will second the Howell idea. I loved it on mine before I went V8. It is designed to go on Your Jeep. The holley system is a universal type kit right?

Daddyjeep Holley makes a kit for Jeep 4.2. Just don't know anyone who has used it. I think its it's fairly new.

True. How about cheaper than the howell efi? Maybe a different carb?

See Lucky Macs #7 post.

Google National carburetors in Florida. I paid $150.00 for the carb that I'm running about 4 years ago. They're probably $160.00 now plus a refundable core charge & shipping.

Most folks that run the Howel setup are very happy with it.
$1400.00 for the Howel kit plus your labor or pay to have it installed is outside the budget of many YJ owners.

cant help you with the cheap part back in the early 90s if put a throttle body injection kit on my 76 CJ5 made by JFI and it gave me problems right out of the box fought it for a few years then I got a hold of 4.0 engine and put the mopar MPI on it. I just sold my CJ this last fall but for around 20 years I had not issues with my motor with the mopar injection.
It was pricey but it ran flawless and still does, I live out in CA and used to hunt in Colorado
and several times drove my jeep to Colorado and back no issues. One of my buddies runs the howell on his CJ7 4.2 and also has had great luck with it.

So many options out there for a DIY "cheap" fix.

As Luckymac mentioned, a better carb would be a good choice.

You can build your own Howell type set up with junk yard parts from a 4.3 GM engine.

Dr Tom touched on another idea... You could find a 4.0 head and factory FI set up and put that on your 4.2 bottom end.

All of these DIY fuel injection options are going to require some work and wiring.

A 1989 Cherokee Renix system has worked well for me and the price was right.
