2004 jeep grand cherokee cooling fan relay location

Engine Cooling problem 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 107000 miles

Hello, can you PLEASE help me. I need to replace my relay for my radiator fan and I can not find it. I have printed out a location of where the module should be. I removed the front passenger headlight along with the bumper. And the relay module is not there. I have a 2004 jeep grand cherokee 2wd 6 cylinder. Can you please let me know if this can be any where else? Help

I'm pretty sure that the fan relay has gone bad in my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 in it.

I have been reading conflicting areas on where this could be located on an 04. I've read on the 99-03 that it's under the passenger side headlight and to gain access to it by cutting a hole under the passenger side light to get at it.

I've seen some postings by 04 Grand owners that they've done this and that there was no relay there.

Has anyone with an 04 Grand with the 4.0 replaced theirs, and was it located under the passenger side headlight.

Was looking for feedback before I dive into this on.

Only way to get to it is either taking the front bumper off then you know the right spot to cut. It is right under the headlight. I would take my headlight out and take a pic but it's too big of a hassle haha. It's not hard to take the bumper off at all then take passenger headlight out and you will see it mounted to the body with 2 bolts.

No, on the 04 things were changed. There are two relays (high speed and low speed) in the PDC (power distribution center) under the hood on the passenger side. A bunch of relays and fuses are located there. The OP will know where to look.

Just checked my wife's '04 with the 4.0, like rm2001wj said, there are two Rad relays, one low and one high, in the power distribution center, between the battery and passenger side fender. They are the rear-most two relays in the PDC, the cover will tell you where they are.

Nice to see you here Tony, and JeepsOLot is right on Target! He knows the '04 WJs really good, and he was at my Jeep/4X4 shop earlier tonight.

Can someone with an 04 take a picture of their fuse box and post up? The pictures on wjjeeps doesn't have those two relays from what I can find.

Is it what's missing from 39 and 40?

I visited my dealer on Saturday morning and explained this whole thing to him, he looked at me like I had three heads. Then I had him try to look up the two relays in the fuse box and he said they don't exist. I told him they absolutely exist and the Jeep's out in the parking lot. I gave him one of the relays and he had a pretty good laugh.

I ended up buying two new replays, they were only like 12-13 bucks each for the Mopar ones. Let the Jeep idle in my driveway for 20 minutes and it ran a tick under 210 and the fan seemed to kick on and off fine.

If anyone on the board has an 04 and does have the relay under the headlight I'd be interested in finding out the build date. It'll help us over here too. This is kind of one of those weird things, when even the dealer's telling you the parts there and it isn't.

I had heard the relays for 04's were changed but thanks for all of the clarifications. Do those relay's last longer than the others as well? Or should I just throw a couple spares in the Jeep for the moment of truth?

I've got 145,000 on my Grand. So you should be good for a while (I'd imagine) if you had to replace them.

Sounds good, thanks, I've got 96k on mine now I'm going to have to check and make sure I have that set up, might throw one spare in my misc. box in back.

Where is the cooling fan relay at?

The fan relay is usually located near the bottom of the engine compartment on a metal frame member. The metal acts as a heat sink to keep the fan relay cool. So, unplug the connector at the relay and repeat the check for power. If you get power, you've got a bum relay.

What relay controls the cooling fan?

The cooling fan relay is the relay that controls the engine's cooling fans. When the correct parameters are met, a temperature switch or the computer will activate the relay, which will allow power to the fans.

What happens when a fan relay fails?

A faulty or broken relay cannot deliver power to the cooling fans. In turn, the unpowered fans won't run, leaving the radiator to its own devices. Deprived of the helpful influx of air from the cooling fans, the radiator cannot remove as much heat as it usually does.
