Do you have to have license to doordash

Sorry for such a late response.

I got my license because it's just "what you do" when you're 16 (at least where I grew up). I had no interest in driving though, and no social life that would make me want a car so that I could go out with friends. I grew up outside of Boston and have lived most of my adult life in Washington DC now - both cities with great public transit.

In my 30's now I see what a huge limitation it is to not be able to drive (I also want to move to the west coast). And after a decade of sitting behind a computer, I want to become a professional driver - a truck driver.

So doing food delivery full time for awhile is my way of catching up and getting comfortable on the road.

I will probably get a Honda Civic or a Prius. Whatever has the best gas mileage.

DoorDash is one of the newest and best on-demand food delivery services.

Customers can access dozens of restaurants through a smartphone app, place an order, and have it delivered straight to their door.

DoorDash drivers pick up the food, drop off the delivery, and get paid.

DoorDash is always looking for people with a car to work for them delivering food.

However, in some cities you don’t even need a car – some locations allow you to deliver by bicycle.

Drivers get to make their own schedules, work the hours they want to work, and choose the assignments they want to do.

On average, DoorDash employees earn between $8 and $15 per hour.

It’s a great gig if you want to make some extra money and work on a flexible schedule.

But, like any job, there are requirements you need to meet before you can sign up to become a DoorDash driver.

If you’re interested in driving (or biking) for DoorDash, keep reading.

Here’s everything you need to know about the requirements you need to meet and the application process.

DoorDash delivery drivers are called “Dashers.”

To become a Dasher, you have to meet a few basic requirements.

You have to be at least 18 years of age to work for the service.

That makes it an excellent option for individuals who aren’t old enough to meet the driver requirements for Uber and Lyft (which, in most cities, is 21).

You must have access to a motor vehicle or a bicycle (if you’re in a city that allows deliveries to be made on two wheels).

In a few select cities, you can do deliveries on foot.

But in most cases, you need wheels to get the job done fast and efficiently.

You also need to have an insurance policy in your name.

Being covered under your parents’ plan isn’t good enough.

You must have a liability insurance policy, at the minimum.

DoorDash requires all drivers to maintain their own insurance and keep that insurance valid and up to date at all times.

Though the minimum age requirement is just 18 years old, you will not qualify unless you can prove that you have two years of driving experience.

It’s also crucial that you have a valid driver’s license and insurance.

The most obvious requirement is that you need to live in – or be able to work in – a city where DoorDash operates.

If you don’t, you’ll have to wait until DoorDash becomes available in your area.

Aside from a car, there is another piece of equipment required to do the job – a smartphone.

You can access the delivery app via iPhone or Android smartphone as long as it is capable of running the app and running the most up-to-date software.

When you apply, you’ll need to consent to a background check, which we’ll go into more detail about later.

If you can’t pass a background check, it will be difficult to get a job working for DoorDash, Uber, Lyft, or any other similar service.

The last thing you’ll need to do is complete a DoorDash orientation session.

If you can’t attend the in-person orientation session, you won’t qualify for the job.

In summary, here are the basic requirements:

  • 18+ years old with 2 years of driving experience
  • Access to a car or bicycle
  • Valid driver’s license and insurance policy
  • Ability to pass a background check and have proper insurance
  • A modern smartphone

DoorDash Background Check

Every applicant must pass a background check.

DoorDash uses a third party company called Checkr, which allows DoorDash to look into your history to determine a variety of different things.

The background check is a fairly straightforward process, similar to one you’d get from a full time employer.

They will verify your age and basic information.

They will take a look into your criminal history (if you have one).

Most people don’t have trouble passing a background check, but some do.

Your application will be instantly rejected if the background check shows a history of violent crimes.

Those include, but aren’t limited to, sexual offenses, theft, and property crimes.

If you have a felony on your record, you won’t be able to work for DoorDash.

DoorDash takes customer safety and security seriously, so anyone with a felony is immediately rejected.

The background check will verify how long you’ve had your driver’s license.

If you’ve been driving for less than two years, don’t even bother applying.

Wait until you have two years of driving experience under your belt first.

DoorDash Vehicle Requirements

In addition to personal requirements, you’ll also have to be able to pass a variety of vehicle requirements.

Are DoorDash’s vehicle requirements rigorous?

The short answer is no.

Unlike Uber and Lyft, there are no cosmetic requirements for Dasher vehicles.

And, unlike Uber and Lyft, there is no vehicle inspection process.

As long as you pass the background check and proper insurance, a few dents and scrapes won’t prevent you from being a Dasher.

As long as your car runs efficiently, DoorDash doesn’t care what year, make, or model you own.

We mentioned earlier that in certain cities, bicycle delivers are allowed.

This applies only to major cities, such as NYC, Boston, Philly, and San Francisco.

In those cities, it’s even possible to complete deliveries on foot.

It makes the job more of a challenge, but in cities packed with traffic, it can sometimes be easier than having to drive and look for parking.

Where bikes are permitted, you can also use a motorcycle or a motorized scooter to deliver food.

If you live in a densely populated area, this is a great option.

If you live in a city that’s more spread out, you’ll need to have a car.

In some cases, you may have to travel several miles from the restaurant to the customer’s home.

Regardless of what you drive, all Dashers must register their vehicle with DoorDash.

Should you decide to change cars, you’ll need to notify the company, so they always have your most up-to-date information.

If you get stuck during this process, there are many different ways to contact DoorDash.

Reach out with one of these methods and their support representatives will help you out.

Location Requirements for Dashers

DoorDash operates in over 300 cities throughout the U.S. and Canada including Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Denver, New York, Boston, Vancouver, and Chicago.

To qualify as a Dasher, you must live or be able to work in one of their local markets.

You are allowed to work in more than one city, but the policy is that you can only work in one city at a time.

To switch to a city that’s different from the one you signed up for, you must notify the company.

You’ll need to file a support case and inform DoorDash of your name, the name of the city you want to add, and the email address linked to your Dasher account.

DoorDash Orientation

We mentioned the new employee orientation earlier – but what does that mean?

Once you’ve passed your background check and your application is approved, you’ll need to attend an in-person orientation class.

DoorDash holds these sessions regularly at each of their home office locations in various cities.

Every new delivery driver must attend.

The orientation program lasts approximately one hour.

If you live in a city without a home office, you can attend an online orientation.

But if you live in a city with a home office, you’ll need to participate in person.

Why is the orientation so important?

During this session, you’ll learn everything you need to know about how to do the job.

From how to use the app to how to pay for orders, you’ll learn all of the essential tools needed to be a successful Dasher.

At the orientation, you will learn how to use the DoorDash app to schedule shifts.

If there are certain days or hours you want to work, you’ll need to visit the app and secure a shift to work on a particular day or at a specific time.

You’ll also learn how to collect payments from customers.

And you’ll learn what might be the most important thing of all – how you get paid.

You’ll learn precisely how and when the company distributes payments to Dashers.

As a delivery driver, you’ll use a DoorDash Red Card to pay for customers’ orders at restaurants.

At orientation, you’ll learn when and how to use the Red Card and how it works.

You will also be instructed on how to contact HR and corporate resources if you run into a problem.

Knowing how to get in touch with the proper people at the support level is crucial if you ever run into an issue.

Before you leave your orientation session, you’ll receive an insulated box and some bags that can be used to transport food orders.

As a driver, it’s up to you to keep the customers’ food hot and fresh, so the insulated packing supplies are an essential tool for the job.

According to current Dashers who have already been through the process, the background check typically clears in one to four days.

If your background check comes back clean, you will receive an email about scheduling an orientation.

You won’t be able to work until your orientation is complete.

Should you need to reschedule your orientation, you can do so, as long as it’s before the scheduled date of your appointment.

To reschedule, log into your account and change the time.

In your Activation Kit, you’ll find a DoorDash tee shirt, a bag, and the Red Card that you’ll need to use to purchase orders from the restaurants.

The last thing you’ll need to do is activate your Red Card.

Just log into your account to activate the card.

Once that’s done, you’re good to go.
