It's not on Netflix, you can't rent it on Youtube, Amazon Prime and Microsoft Store only accept US cards while I'm European. It's driving me crazy! Especially since I just finished the original lotr trilogy and I actually haven't seen the hobbit trilogy yet (although I did read the book a few years ago). Any ideas? Maybe I'm just terrible at googling?

Yes.

An Unexpected Journey doesn't add much: that film played like an extended cut in theaters already. But there are nice little bits and pieces in it.

The Desolation of Smuag, which was the best to begin with, is improved massively. There's a whole new story thread added, several setpieces get a chance to breathe more (Mirkwood being my favourite setpiece of the trilogy as result of the expansion) and the Dwarves get a much needed reintroduction.

The Battle of the Five Armies is also greatly improved. A lot of the extension is more fighting and violence, but there are also a precious couple of character moments for the individual Dwarves, and a very fun setpiece with a war chariot.

This is genius.

Then again, the second and third movies might be amazing, so maybe not.

While I love the EE of LOTR, the Hobbit already feels bloated. I can't see what they can add that is worthwhile. Of course, i will also wind up getting when it is released, because I am a sucker

Everything that extends my time in middle-earth is worth for me.

I'm hoping make the extra padding will make the pacing better.

Didn't the extended versions of Lord of the Rings actually cut some theatrical scenes also?

Preparing myself now for the 26 hour Hobbit-LOTR marathon.

This does not include the 4000 hours of bonus material.

Wouldn't it be a Hexology?

So this has everything from the LOTR Trilogy as well? I was gonna get the trilogy for BluRay since I just got a player, but I might as well wait if that's the case.

What is up with the black arrow thing? There was only one black arrow on the book and it pierced a non-armored area.

level 1

Extended? Good God. Was there anybody in the world who walked out of The Hobbit and thought to themselves, "You know, that movie wasn't long enough."

level 2

Some people just really want more LOTR in general. They love the setting that much.

level 2

Actually, yeah. I thought it was perfectly paced, saw most of the changes as justified, and was expecting a lighter, more episodic tone mixed with some of the heavier moments of the other films. This was exactly the movie I wanted.

Jesus, how did they manage to turn a 200 page book into a 3-part extended series?

level 2

In the mail in a box, there lived a check.

Tolkein wrote The Hobbit before a lot of the lore surrounding Middle Earth was written. In the Similarion Tolkein wrote about a lot of stuff that was happening during The Hobbit.

I see that the movies are available on HBO Max and Amazon Prime, but I don't know if they're the theatrical or the extended editions. If they're just the theatricals, where can I find the extended versions?

I brought these yesterday after finishing the Lego Hobbit game and so far I am really enjoying them (have watched 1 and a half). I enjoyed the Mirwook extension, and the part in the pub with the details about the rings (I think it was extended, please correct me if I am wrong).

Now I know I am going to get some hate for this, but I recently read the book, and I think the films are much, much better, now that I have had a chance to start rewatching them. I was very disappointed in the book for several reasons - partly because the description of dwarves sounded more like garden gnomes in the book then the dwarves we are used to, and I had trouble taking it seriously. Partly because the other descriptions were bad. And the characters (apart from Bilbo and gandlaf) just seemed so bland. Thorin seemed so much more king like in the films than in the books (also, Richard Armitage's sexy voice can stop almost anything from being bad).

There is some stuff I disagree with still (the melting gold onto the dragon thing, maybe a tad too much Legolas, the very very confusing battle), but I feel like if it wasn't for everyone comparing it to the book, most of us would have found it all right. I am proudly displaying it next to my LOTR Extended DVDs.

The first two didn't add much. The third Hobbit extended edition is totally worth it--not more accurate, but definitely a better movie.
