The three-day festival marks the return of the city to normalcy.

three day annual The Great San Juan Bautista Rib Cook-Off had a quiet opening on April 29, as a relatively small crowd took to Third Street to sample from eight competing barbecue vendors, serving as a prelude to the record-breaking crowd over the weekend. was serving in

When the dust settled two days later, Carson City BBQ of Carson City, Nevada, was declared the winner of the People’s Choice and Best Ribs, with Joshua Ribbs of Sacramento taking home the trophy for Best Sauce.

“We couldn’t be happier,” said Jason Williams, who has managed 15 of 17 cook-offs. “The weather was great, the crowds were incredible, and it was great to be back in San Juan Bossista. I think there is a lot of demand and events like this are getting a lot of traction lately. We had a great turnout. Friday was like a day for the locals but Saturday and Sunday were quite intense.

The pandemic forced the cancellation of events in 2020 and 2021, leaving contestants happy to be back in town as attendees queued up for their ribs at the cook.

“Before the pandemic, we usually hit all the big festivals,” said Ralph Reyes of Lord of the Ribs BBQ in Sacramento. “But we could only do one San Jose Summer Fest last year. Now, things are starting to open back up, we have a few more on the books, but there are still a lot of promoters who don’t want to draw big crowds.”

Reyes, who is marking his eighth year as a San Juan cook-off vendor, has a particular fondness for the event.

“Of all the festivals we go to,” he said, “this is the only one that’s specifically a rib cook-off. I think it really inspires all of us because we know that everybody just wants ribs and we are going to be up against some strong competition.

As with last month’s Arts and Crafts Festival, some of the 120 crafts and specialty vendors on the side streets were needed for the space to be taken up by the Third Street Parklet and the event was extended to one block of the Alhambra as well. Parking was mainly at the San Juan School and the surrounding football field.

The incident proved to be a nice break from work for Alex Flores and some of his coworkers at Taylor Farms. Flores grew up in San Juan Bautista and was very happy to see the festival return.

“It’s a nice day out and there’s great food in a great atmosphere,” he said. “I got some ribs, some chicken, some beans—a little bit of everything, to be honest. We are sitting here and enjoying people-watching and listening to music, having a good time.”

The San Juan event is one of only three cook-offs lucrative enough for the Doctor’s Q’in pit stop in Modesto to participate during the year.

“We do both the rib cook-off and the wing cook-off in Reno, then here we come,” said owner Jermaine Clark. “These are the biggest. We can spend more days on them and be able to work around our catering business.”

On April 29, Clark started the day with a rack of 100 ribs, which he confidently predicted would be “enough to feed everyone”.

Lord of the Ribs began by cooking 100 racks, but by 3:30 p.m., he had cooked all 175 racks he had brought for Friday and was in danger of running out of food before the day was over. Reyes said he plans to bring in 225 racks on Saturday and hopes that will be enough.

First-timers Dan Clifford and his friends took full advantage of Friday’s short lines and feasted on ribs from four of the eight vendors.

“People I knew in the area told me to come downstairs today if I wanted to get some awesome ribs,” he said. “Lord of the ribs was probably our favorite. The meat fell off the bone and the sauce was great; sweet with a bit of pungency. I’m having fun, the weather is beautiful, and I enjoy checking out all the vendors selling my wares.” I totally plan on coming back next year.”

The event had eight contestants and prizes:

  • Carson City BBQ, Carson City, Nevada: People’s Choice, 1st place for Best Ribs and 2nd for Best Sauce.
  • Doc’s Q’in Pit Stop, Modesto.
  • Git-R-Smoked, Reno, Nevada: Second place for best ribs and third for best sauce
  • Indonesian Truth BBQ, Los Angeles.
  • Joshua’s Ribs, Sacramento: First Place for Best Sauce.
  • Lord of the Ribs, San Jose.
  • Mansmith’s BBQ, San Juan Bautista: 3rd place for best ribs.
  • Valley Smoke BBQ, Salinas.
