The men’s second semi-final at Roland Garros was briefly interrupted when a protester entered the pitch wearing a T-shirt that read ‘We Have 1028 Days Left’. What does that mean and which group took responsibility for it?

You’re playing in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam – with the terrifying prospect of presenting the final prize to Rafael Nadal on his favorite surface, and then a protester bursts onto the pitch to disrupt proceedings.

That’s exactly what happened to Casper Rudd and Marin Cilic in their semi-final at Roland Garros, when the match was briefly interrupted in the third set when a young woman entered the court.

She tied herself to the net with a zip tie before being removed about 15 minutes later.

However, she wore a t-shirt that read “We have 1028 days left”? What does that mean and which group took responsibility for the stunt?

Who is responsible for the French Open protesters?

Shortly after the Roland Garros incident, the Derniere Renovation group claimed responsibility for the invasion on social media.

The group claimed on Twitter that 22-year-old Alizée was the woman who entered Phillipe Chatrier’s court wearing the t-shirt that read “We have 2018 days left.”

In the tweet, Alizée claims that “I entered the field because I can no longer risk doing nothing in the face of the climate emergency.”

It’s just the latest in a string of field/court invasions in the sport in recent years.

At the 2020 British Grand Prix, protesters from Extinction Rebellion dressed up as marshals to unfurl a banner behind closed doors just before the start of the race.

In football, a Premier League game between Everton and Newcastle United in March 2022 was interrupted when a protester cable tied his neck to a goal post.

What does “We have 1028 days left” mean?

The message “We have 1028 days left” is believed to refer to a recent United Nations climate report, which states that humanity has little time left to respond to the climate emergency.

As of June 3, 2022 – the day of the protest, is 1028 days in the future Thursday March 27, 2025.

After Alizée and her t-shirt that read “We Have 1028 Days Left” were removed, the match resumed.

Rudd went on to claim a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 win over Cilic.

It is the Norwegian’s first Grand Slam final ever – and he will face the greatest clay tennis player of all time in Nadal, who has 13 wins at Roland Garros and has lost just three games since 2005.

The French Open semi-final between Casper Ruud and Marin Cilic was held up for 10 minutes after a woman who wore a T-shirt bearing the slogan ‘we have 1028 days left’ invaded the court and tied herself to the net.

The woman is believed to be a climate-change protester.

She walked on to Court Phillipe-Chatrier unchallenged during the third set and attached herself to the net, raising serious questions about security at Roland Garros.

Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo looked on as the players left the court for 10 minutes while the woman was removed.

The incident came after Alexander Zverev suffered a serious injury in the first semi-final, forcing him to retire from his match against Rafael Nadal.

Eurosport pundit Tim Henman described the incident as unsettling.

“No, really shocking scenes, she jumped onto the court and sat down next to the net and it seems like she has attached herself to the net and had something written on her shirt as well and she has tied something around her neck,” Henman said on Eurosport TV.

“So horrible circumstances for the players, and it’s obviously one of their biggest matches and now you’ve got an interruption midway through this third set.

“The players have rightly been taken off the court and it’s up to the security to get things under control. It’s not what you are expecting, we were so shocked to see the Zverev situation and we get on to the second match, midway through the third set, and it is very unsettling for everyone, it’s unsettling here in the studio.

“It’s unsettling and for the two athletes out on court, you’re so focused on what’s going on in the match and for in that type of context, Ruud is in control, he is up 4-1, two breaks, and he is thinking more of the same and then you get such an unexpected interruption, so it’s not easy from his point of view.

“It’s scary for that type of thing, we didn’t expect that at all and we go back to that mentality of sport, it’s about staying in the present and not worrying about the past because you can’t change it. So to have a protester on the court is unsettling, so I hope they can get back out there and play some great tennis and it doesn’t have an impact on this third set.”
