The Lord of the Flies is a novel written by William Golding. It describes the events that unfold when a group of British boys get into a plane crash and are stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean.

When three boys climb the mountain, they are able to see the island is shaped like a boat and that there are no other patches of land in sight.

The island seems to have everything the boys could need. It has plenty of fruit trees to keep them fed, and wild pigs provide a source of meat. The island has fresh water for drinking and bathing, and it has dead trees that make perfect firewood. However, the boys think the island is home to a sort of "beastie" — a monster that is described as snake-like.

Lord of the Flies Island Description

Three boys, Ralph (the chief), Jack, and Simon, venture out to verify if the land the boys are stranded on is an island. To get a good view, they climb to the top of a mountain, where they are able to see the entire island. It is described in the novel as:

"It was roughly boat-shaped: humped near this end with behind them the jumbled descent to the shore. On either side rocks, cliffs, treetops, and a steep slope: forward there, the length of the boat, a tamer descent, tree-clad, with hints of pink: and then the jungly flat of the island, dense green, but drawn at the end to a pink tail. There, where the island petered out in the water, was another island; a rock, almost detached, standing like a fort, facing them across the green with one bold, pink bastion."

The most prominent features of the island include:

  • Mountain: The mountain is the highest point on the island, and it lies on one side of the boat-shaped island. The sides of the mountain are covered in trees and rock, including pink granite. The top of the mountain has a flat, circular patch, which is where the boys decide to place the signal fire. While they have the fire on the mountain, the location is too dangerous for a camp.
  • Castle Rock: Castle Rock is located on the other tip of the "boat." It is a treacherous rock that stands separate, though not fully disconnected, from the rest of the island. To get to Castle Rock, the boys must cross over dangerous narrow ledges.
  • Beach: The boys decide to set up their camp on the sandy beach of the island. They have a platform, a meeting area, and their shelters. The beach also has a small pond, where the boys bathe.
  • Jungle: Much of the island is covered in dense jungle, filled with trees and vines. The jungle provides the boys with fruit and wood, and the boys hunt pigs living in the forest. The boys are scared of the dark jungle because they think a beast is living in it. Simon, one of the boys, has a secret glad in the jungle where he sneaks off.
  • Lagoon: The island has a lagoon running along one side that is bordered by a jagged reef.
  • Scar: Between the beach and the mountain runs the scar, which is the area that was damaged when the plane crashed.
