Despite the size of his name to that of the band's in the cover art, this is not a Kenny Rogers collection. It's a group thing, a First Edition compilation, and it's a very good one. The usual hits are here, for sure. Just Dropped In. But You Know I Love You. Something's Burning. Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town. Reuben James. Tell It All, Brother. Heed the Call. There are also a whole lot of B-sides (Momma's Waiting), deep cuts (Calico Silver), and covers (Me and Bobby McGee), two-dozen tracks in total, all of which are interesting at the very least, and equals to many of the hits in some cases. And they're all ... group efforts! If you want to catch a listen to Mister (Kenny) Rogers before he went middle-of-the-road, this one's a great place to start. Four stars and highly recommended to fans of '60s/'70s folk- and country-rock.

The CD was shipped in a paper mailer with very little padding and the result is that the CD case is cracked. I havenโ€™t yet played it to assure the CD isnโ€™t damaged. Iโ€™m hoping itโ€™s ok

Not what I expected. However ok

Most of them are okay for my tastes, but there are a few standouts. Mama's Waiting. I Just Dropped By (to See What Condition My Condition is In). Something's Burning. And probably my favorite, Rueben James (written by Alex Harvey and Barry Estris).

This is not country, but rather sometimes country-rock and sometimes country-folk. If you want to hear an early Kenny Rogers before he became more gravelly-voiced or like any of these older tunes, this a nice album to add to your collection.

SO glad to find this compilation -- CD is great!!

This CD contains Kenny's early recordings from the 60's including "Rubie, Don't Take Your Love to Town", "Ruben James", "Something's Burnin'" and "Me and Bobby McGee". Kenny Rogers and the First Eddition material has been issued several times on bootleg releases with sub- par sound quality. There are ballads including "For the Good Times", "Where Does Rosey Goe", "She Didn't Mean to Say Goodbye" and "Sunshine". I also enjoyed "What Am I Gonna Do". Kenny doesn't lead the voclas on all the songs. There are 2 songs not sung by Kenny included. There is a gatefold insert with the liner notes. This CD is deleted now, but I found one really cheaply on Amazon.

To listen to and I loved Kenny Rogers.

Late 60s and early 70s this was the band with many hits from I Just Dropped in To See What Condition Was In to Heed the Call, Something's Burning and soft ballads. This fits any collection of the Woodstock generation. I guarantee you will remember all the hits as they are played. And soon you'll be singing along and dancing to the music.

A great collection by Kenny Rogers & the first edition. Two dozen great songs.

Please don't pay attention to the review that claims Kenny Rogers deserted the band for a solo career, with the alleged quote from Thelma Camacho. First of all, Thelma left the group, and was then replaced by her good friend Mary Arnold, and the band continued to tour and record for at least six more years. Furthermore, as Kenny Rogers himself confirmed in an interview on BBC TV in 1985 with Terry Wogan on his prime time tv show, he did all be could to keep the group together, but other members dropped out as they wanted career changes. Indeed, it is well documented by the time the group split, in order to keep them going, Rogers had racked up personal debts of tens of thousands of dollars. He then relaunched his solo career, but he had to start again at the bottom, as it had been a few years since the first edition had really had a major hit.

I find it hard to believe the so called quote from Thelma Camacho based on all the facts. By the time Kenny was a solo superstar, she had been out of the group for many years. A group he held together long after her leaving. Just goes to prove Abraham Lincoln was correct when he said "don't believe what you read on the internet , just because someone puts it as a quote as said by a well known name."

4.0 out of 5 stars Kenny Drops The Penny

I remember Thelma Camacho saying:
One day, we were on top, then we all got a call from Kenny and he says it's all over for the First Edition.
He went out on his own, in doing so, he cast the group adrift with no prospects, and no further income.
That is EVIL.
Just the same, they are all here, including all their best remembered hits.
This was their output for REPRISE Records.
Kenny went on an re-recorded much of the same for Liberty, RCA, and later, United Artists-which also purchased Liberty.
The female Kenny used on these sessions could never reach the quality of Ms. Comacho's voice.
Good one if you want the original REPRISE output.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good CD

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Kenny Rogers & The First Edition

a very pleasant CD, and nice to hear the music. I bought this CD because I remembered particularly liking two of the tracks Ruby Dont Take Your Love To Town, and Reuben James, and I like to play a CD while doing the housework. The seller dispatched the item promptly.
