May 4, 2018 Hi - this is my first post to this forum. I've had Jeep Grand Cherokees for several years: 2010 Limited, 2014 Summit and now a 2017 SRT. When I took the SRT in for routine maintenance (basically an oil change and inspection) the dealer noted that I needed to replace the front brake pads and rotors at a cost of $2,923. I only had 14,749 miles on the car
and I don't drive it hard. I have never had to replace the brake pads or rotors on either of my previous Jeeps. This sounds like BS to me but I wanted to get feedback from the forum whether needing new front bake pads and rotors is reasonable after only 14,749 miles. Thanks! Joined Jun 14, 2008 · 1,833 Posts
Milage varies on the brakes. You could check them out yourself or get a second opinion to be sure. New brakes for the SRT can seem costly because usually they replace the pads and rotors together. Our rotors are suppose to be made close to minimum thickness, so most places wont resurfacing. There are less expensive options than stock though, give R1 a
call. Also, did your Jeep come the the standard Brembo discs or the upgraded 2 piece rotors? Joined

Like pnut said, I would start by either checking yourself or get a second opinion. Its not unheard of, depending on how hard braking was, and other factors its a possibilty. Joined

Discussion Starter · #4 · May 5, 2018 Thanks, I will definitely get a second opinion, just seems strange for the brakes to go so soon. I have the factory Brembo brakes. I talked to a local jeep mechanic (there aren't many in my area, or dealers for that matter) and he recommends that I go to the dealer to install factory brakes as he was a bit reluctant to work on mine with after-market brands as
the tolerances are so tight for this vehicle he was concerned he wouldn't install them correctly. Anyway, I need to investigate this further. In the meantime, braking seems fine and no excessive dust or any squeaking. Joined Jul 26, 2015 · 53 Posts
I'd never get a brake job at the dealer.. I bought ebc yellow stuff, and some drilled and slotted rotors online (warranty against cracking etc.) parts under $600, $100 for the install. (front only)

Discussion Starter · #7 · May 14, 2018 UPDATE: I got a second opinion and the front pads and rotors do in fact need to be replaced (pads down to 1mm) so the dealer was correct in his assessment but apparently the stock Brembo pads and rotors are back-ordered across the country so the implication is that this is an issue across the board with SRTs as the dealer said the parts aren't typically on
back-order everywhere. Since the pads were out after relatively little use (15,000 miles of standard driving) and the parts are back-ordered everywhere could this be a defect in the SRT that Jeep needs to investigate? Joined Apr 13, 2018 · 105 Posts

Could be. Not super uncommon for brembo to be on back order. They have gotten a lot better. But it wasnt a rare thing not to long ago. WK2s had pads on back order a few times, Lexus pads, 350z pads. There are tons of
others out there. EBC is a great choice in brakes for SRT8s, I sell those more than others. EBC Stage 5 kits, Dimpled and Slotted Rotors with full thermic black geomet coating on the entire rotor for great corrosion resistance, even in the vanes inside the rotor. And the Yellowstuff pads, designed for Jeep, Truck, and SUV. Made to some of the best from Street to the Track. You also have DBA, high quality and the choice of getting 2 piece rotors if you wanted/needed. As well as Hawk, R1,
and Stoptech. Joined May 26, 2019 · 6 Posts
I'm in a similar spot, just under 20k miles and I need new brakes. Dealer quoted me around $4.5k for all four to get done, another shop quoted $4k with getting the parts direct from the dealer. Obviously that's not an ideal situation. For the EBC brakes, do the pads just fit into the Brembo caliper and replace the Brembos? The Yellows seem
perfect and at a very reasonable price. Thanks Joined Apr 1, 2019 · 3 Posts
Just wanted to ask a related question here... What have some of you with the High Performance brakes been doing for replacements for the 2 piece rotors? What are good options out there? Joined Jun 14, 2008 · 1,833 Posts
My front brakes were done at 15k miles. I had Performance rotors in front and the dealer quoted me in the $4k range.. just for the fronts. I ended up going with Racing Brake brand rotors and pads. The RB set has 2 piece rotors for front and back. There pads have equal if not better bite than the Brembos, and are quiet an much less dust. All this
for a few hundred more than just the front Brembos. Even though the Brembos are 2 piece rotors, the dealer doesn’t have a part # for just the rings. RB sells replacement rings so when it comes time to replace, it will be cheaper. Joined Apr 1, 2019 · 3 Posts

Just tried to talk with someone at Racing Brake (racingbrake.com), seems like unless you know a name you aren't talking to anyone. So where are you guys buying their products, and why would you buy from a company that doesn't have a dedicated customer service
department to at least answer questions? Comically they have a "Now available on Amazon" link at the bottom of their Website that links to no products on Amazon. Joined Jun 14, 2008 · 1,833 Posts
I guess I got lucky. Since they are only about 45 minutes from me, I dealt with them face to face. I believe Black Ops sells them though.

My 2 cents is be sure to check your rears. I've been getting 2 or 3 front sets to 1 rear. Just because the fronts are out, doesn't mean the rears are. It's fairly simple to check yourself, just look how much pad there is to the back plate

You can for sure get cheap rotors. One thing to consider though, besides material, is the runout as manufactured. Brembo has a really low runout figure, don't remember what it is, I think EBC is more but still reasonable. Joined Jul 5, 2019 · 138 Posts

do... I would spend the extra money, if I was going to track it... what kills brakes is repeated hard braking without letting them cool down... the type of thing you can really only do on a track... if you are driving like that on the street... "you have a problem"... I have used these on a 2015 825HP mustang GT, trailblazer SS and a buick regal... I have never had any issues... but, I have never tracked any of these cars...
