How Hormonal Birth Control Works

Depo-Provera (also spelled Depot Provera in some medical materials) is an injectable form of hormonal birth control that involves getting a shot in your arm or buttocks every three months. It works similarly to birth control pills.

It starts to work as contraception immediately if you get your first shot within five days of beginning your period.

Depo-Provera suppresses a woman’s own hormones, preventing the ovaries from releasing eggs into the fallopian tubes. The synthetic progesterone hormone will reduce sperm fertilization by increasing the thickening of the cervical mucus and reducing motility in the fallopian tubes, so the sperm has difficulty traveling in the female reproductive tract.

The cervical mucus thickens and the uterine lining changes so that it's harder for sperm to enter or survive in the uterus. All of these changes prevent fertilisation.

When a woman stops using Depo, her body tries to restore hormonal balance and regain reproductive function by restoring normal production of estrogen by the ovaries in preparation for ovulation.

What Are Common Side Effects After Going Off Depo Injections?

• Spotting and irregular periods.
• Loss of bone mineral density, which can make osteoporosis more likely. This risk is greater if you have used Depo-Provera for longer than two years.
• Difficulty conceiving. Some women become pregnant as soon as 3 to 4 months after receiving their last injection. But it takes some women up to a year or two to conceive after they stop using this type of birth control.
• Some women find that, after going off of Depo, symptoms that they had while using the injections get worse. These side effects include heavy bleeding, extreme breast tenderness, weight gain, headaches, nausea, mood swings, depression, and hair loss.

Is Infertility a Side-Effect of Going Off of Depo-Provera?

"Depo-Provera is a strong pituitary suppressant of hormone stimulation to the ovaries, meaning it will prevent ovulation," says Dr. Mark Trolice, Director of Fertility Care at the IVF Center in Winter Park, Florida. "The longer Depo-Provera is used, the longer it will take your body to restore normal menstrual cycles. I have seen up to 18 months of no periods after discontinuing Depo-Provera and before ovulation resumes, particularly in women who gained weight while on the medication."

That being said, Dr. Trolice notes, once regular periods resume, women should have no increased difficulty conceiving, particularly if periods were regular before using Depo-Provera.

My Experience Stopping Depo-Provera

I have to say that, in my opinion, and based on the stories shared on the Internet from other women in situations similar to mine, the side effects of this form of birth control can extend way past the point of its current use and time that it takes for the chemicals to leave the body.

Spotting and Irregular Periods After Depo-Provera

I was advised (all those years ago) that should I ever decide that I wanted to have a baby, it could take a while for it to happen after discontinuing the Depo injections. I was told that it could take up to two years for my period and fertility to return to normal.

I have to say it took about half a year longer than that! I have only just had my first period after a decade of getting the injections. It was not quite normal either. I had quite a few weeks of on-and-off spotting before having what could be called a true period of any description. I had had weeks of spotting on and off about 6 months after initially coming off the injection but it was typically more off then on.

I don't regret going on this form of birth control. The side effects for me proved very positive and to be honest I am a little scared of the complete return to my 'normal' periods. I am also worried that I may find it takes a long time still to become pregnant.

Difficulty Getting Pregnant After Depo-Provera

When the two-year mark had passed and the only change in my body was tender and painful nipples, I started reading what I could find of other people's experiences with coming off the injection. I found a few stories of women afraid that they had been made infertile. The stories ranged from two years of no period and no pregnancy (the maximum length of time medically advised for a return to fertility) to pregnancies ending in upsetting miscarriages.

I am going off of memory, but I do recall a story of someone who believed Depo-Provera to be responsible for their premature menopause after they came off of the drug. It does seem from my experience that this could well be possible, as my body is certainly producing results beyond what I was told could happen when I decided to start the injection.

I am not giving up hope that I may well find myself with a healthy, normal child now that I have had a heavier period (though not as bad as I used to be able to get). In 10 years, a lot can happen to a person and I have gone from thinking I should not have a kid (barely being able to take care of myself, let alone a baby) to being married and confident that I could provide a loving and happy home to a child.

If this medication has had such an effect on my body as to reduce my fertility permanently (making pregnancy very difficult) it would be upsetting as the medical advice did not alert me to this possibility.

On the other hand, when I started on Depo-Provera, I did not want to have a baby and probably would have made the same choice even if I had been told that it would reduce my chance of ever getting pregnant.

Life is full of choices and once made, our choices are our responsibility. Someone who wants to be more careful in making their birth control choice that I was should investigate their options further.

Does Depo-Provera Lead to a Loss of Bone Density?

"While the FDA has issued a warning on the increased risk of fracture while on Depo-Provera," says Dr. Mark Trolice, "several societies, including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology believe the contraceptive benefits outweigh the theoretical risk of bone loss."

Studies also show that the decline in bone density significantly reverses after stopping Depo-Provera.

The most serious side effect is a loss of bone density that can occur over a prolonged period of use. I spent many years using the Depo birth control injections and have not experienced a loss of bone density so it seems that, though it is a serious concern, it is not a certainty. I may well have been consuming a large enough amount of calcium and I was not still growing when I started it (I was in my mid-20s).

Breast Tenderness

The unusually high estrogen levels that come after stopping Depo-Provera can cause mild to severe breast soreness, not unlike the way breasts can feel before a menstrual period or during pregnancy.

What Are Signs That Depo-Provera Is Wearing Off?

"Patients usually stop menstrual bleeding while on Depo-Provera," says Dr. Mark Trolice. "If you experience a return of bleeding while on Depo-Provera, this may suggest breakthrough ovulation or an anatomic issue with your uterus, so seek advice from your gynecologist."

In order to be sure that the birth control is fully effective, women have to get Depo-Provera injections every 12 weeks. Once 12 weeks have passed with no injection, the hormones slowly wear off over time.

Some women who want to get pregnant after stopping injections conceive in just 3 or 4 months, while others wait as long as two years.

Pros and Cons of Birth Control Pills vs. Injections

Birth control pills and injections work in a similar way. The main difference is how the hormones are delivered.

Birth control pills:

• may be more expensive than Depo injections
• may cause milder side effects because the hormones are delivered gradually on a daily basis
• can be risky because you have to remember to take them.

Birth control injections:

• are convenient because one shot lasts three months
• can lead to extreme side effects because the hormones enter the body all at once.

What Are the Side Effects While Using Depo-Provera?

1. Decrease and Eventual Stopping of Menstrual Period

There are quite a few possible side effects of using Depo-Provera, though the only one that I experienced was my period stopping.

This is a common side effect (it seems). I found this effect to be wonderful as my periods had been intensely painful and triggered severe depression that could leave me suicidal.

2. Weight Gain While Using Depo-Provera

The next side effect that most women need to think about is weight gain. I did not notice any appreciable weight gain but it does seem like it is the most common side effect.

3. Nervousness, Mood Swings, and Depression

Some women report feeling anxious and depressed while using Depo-Provera. Unfortunately, this can continue after stopping the injections. Women who experienced anxiety before beginning the injections are more likely to see this condition get worse while using Depo.

Women with a history of mood disorders should talk to their doctors before starting Depo-Provera to discuss the risks.

Other Side Effects of Depo-Provera

Things other women have experienced include:

• Headaches
• Bloating
• Hot flashes
• Decreased interest in sex
• Acne
• Hair loss
• Backache

I Haven't Started Using Depo Yet. What Can I Do to Avoid Bad Side Effects?

"Physicians can educate women on what to expect, so they're not surprised," says Dr. Nicole Swiner, a family physician at Durham Family Medicine in Durham, North Caroline, "or start them immediately on a different treatment to help continue (menstrual) regularity."

As stated earlier, women with a history of mood disorders should take care before starting Depo-Provera as these women are more likely to experience heightened anxiety while on the medication.

Is Depo-Provera the Same as Medroxyprogesterone?

Yes. Medroxyprogesterone is a synthetic type of female hormone, similar to the progesterone that women produce naturally. It is available by prescription in tablet and injection form under the brand names Depo-Provera, Depo-SubQ Provera 104, MPA, Provera, and Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate.

Will Weight-Bearing Exercises Help Prevent Osteoporosis?

Bones are living tissue, just like muscles, and they become stronger when we exercise. We all lose bone mass as we age, but women, in particular, can reduce their chances of getting osteoporosis by exercising regularly.

If you are concerned about your bone mineral density after coming off of Depo-Provera, consider heading to the gym. More and more women are lifting weights these days, so you'll have plenty of company! Ask a gym staff member for tips on developing a routine, or use one developed specifically for female lifters.

Will Using Depo-Provera Increase My Breast Cancer Risk?

Research is contradictory on the question of whether hormonal birth control increases the risk of cancer.

Some studies show an increased risk of breast cancer but a decrease in risk of endometrial and ovarian cancers among women who use birth control pills. This link might be caused by high doses of estrogen, but women in studies who took Depo-Provera, which only contains progesterone, have also been found to have higher rates of breast cancer.

Please read this before, during or after your experience with the depo shot, because you are not alone. And up until about an hour ago, I thought I was insane and alone.

First, thank you all for your comments. I have found comfort in knowing now that I am not alone.

I started the depo shot June 2019 and initially I started noticing a little drop in my moods. But I am diagnosed with Bipolar, Depression, Anxiety, BPD and PTSD so I just thought maybe I was having a bad week or something. Then that week turned into months, and now here I am a year later. I went from being completely stable and happy and organized, taking one pill a day for mood stabilization, to now being a total and complete shell of a human being that daydreams about dying to escape it. I cry every day just about. I cry myself to sleep and when I say cry I mean GUT WRENCHING SOBS with desperate feelings of not being able to do it anymore. My finances are a wreck. My ability to work is almost zero. I can't find joy in anything for more than moments at a time. I spent my life building a family, learning coping skills, developing my own sense of spirituality, learning who I was and overcoming severe childhood and adult trauma. Now I can't even shower without threatening myself. I can't pick out what to wear without melting down. I can't handle holding a conversation with anyone. I push everyone away coldly.I can't remember what happened or when it happened in the last year because its all a fucking blur that runs together like someone poured water down a wet painting. I am on the verge of losing everything and everyone that matters to me. If I didn't have this burning desire to care for my children and provide for them, I would have already killed myself. But I know I am responsible for them, I know they need me to keep pushing through it, and I know they would be devastated to lose me. At least for now. Every day that knowledge becomes debatable more and more. Every day I reason out how I could provide for them without continuing to live. I get so desperate to not be in agony and feel these mood swings and irritability and instability any more. I literally feel like I cannot bear another hour of it.

This is not who I am. Despite everything I have always been a people-loving, optimistic, hopeful, kind and deeply loving person. Now I just daydream about running away from everyone, I feel hopeless, LET ME REPEAT, I FEEL COMPLETELY HOPELESS. I can't even reach out and tell my loved ones how I am feeling because SURPRISE- I NOW DISASSOCIATE. I now get repulsed by hugs and signs of affection from my own family members, it literally sometimes makes my skin crawl. I find it like pulling teeth with tweezers to be able to just say "I love you" or "I care" or even to just speak to them. I think the whole world is shit now. I feel like there is literally nothing but misery. OH, and I can't get good sleep. I now wake up anxious every 30 mins to 2 hours. I am having racing thoughts half the time and slow depressed thoughts the other half. There is maybe one to four hours in a week total that I could say that I feel somewhat border-lining normal, and that's accumulating moments here and there where I remember to stimulate my vagus nerve or meditate and it actually helps in that moment, or when I lay my head on my boyfriend's chest and can hear his heartbeat for a moment over my own screaming thoughts. OR when my kids draw me a note or something and it actually penetrates through my mental Berlin Wall.

And all of this, it came only after I started the depo shot.

As of June 2020, my shot is done. I had the last injection in April. And I honestly thought I would start feeling better. But here is something I wasn't prepared for-- I feel about one million times worse. I feel like I am coming out of some dark coma I've been in and my emotional roller coaster ride just got dialed up by about one million percent. I finally researched that it takes time for this nasty, vile poison to work it's way out of your system. As of about an hour ago, I have finally begun to bleed for the first time in almost a year. I am cramping like a bitch, I am nauseated, my breasts are throbbing with tenderness and pain, and my moodiness is severe tonight. But I actually am feeling a shred of hope that it is the beginning of it working it's way out of my body.

I'm sorry this got so lengthy, but like, I had to share this with someone that could understand. And yes, I am seeing a therapist and I have a psychiatrist. Can I tell them just how bad it is? Nope. Because I have a family to support and cannot afford to even miss one day of work to be hospitalized, among other reasons that would cost me what is left of my life. I don't need anyone to tell me the suicide hotline or anything like that, I know the number. I know self coping skills, I'm armed with over ten years of therapy and psychiatric help. The problem is that I have literal poison in my blood stream and I have to wait on it to bleed out. Sounds dramatic right? Did you know that in some places the depo shot is used as a form of chemical castration for pedophiles and sex offenders? I learned that too just recently. It's fucking poison.

And no, not a single doctor warned me of any of these side effects or that women with mental health issues were far more likely to have these complications.

Oh! I almost forgot...I've gained weight. (THE LEAST OF MY PROBLEMS BUT DEFINITELY DOESN'T MAKE ME ANY HAPPIER.) I have bone density loss...my teeth suddenly became like swiss cheese despite my diligent oral care. I've now had to have three teeth pulled and I've got at least 6 more fillings needed and I have had more than ten fillings in the last 10 months. My dentist told me that it was the depo shot and that I would lose all of my teeth if I didn't get off the shot. He said he couldn't fill them fast enough.

I'm going to try and wrap this up, so if you made it this far, thank you. And I hope it helps you to know that you aren't crazy and that this isn't your fault.

To sum things up, I just want to be me again. As I write this I am sobbing, I feel like if I can make it another day maybe tomorrow will be better. That's the first time I have felt palpable hope in months. All because I think my period is starting and I won't be stuck like this possibly forever. If you're out there and you're reading this because you are researching whether or not you should get this shot, for the love of yourself and anything you hold dear, including but not limited to your own personal sanity and identity, DO NOT DO IT. IT IS NOT WORTH THE RISK.

And like, if I don't make it through this, I hope someone in my life can sue the ever loving hell out of the depo company and cause it to be banned for the safety of all of us that were thrown to the wolves all for the sake of preventing pregnancy or regulating periods or treating a medical issue. Like I said, tonight I am clinging to my shred of hope. And if you are going through this with me, I implore you to find your shred of hope too. And I pray to every god imaginable that we make it through this and return to who we were before we were given this toxic shit. I pray that we can find happiness and peace again. I pray that we can enjoy things again, or feel stable, or sleep through the night, or feel peaceful inside again. For what it's worth, I'm rooting for you all and my heart breaks for each of you, but again, thank you for sharing with me that I am not alone.

I’ve been off depo since November of last year, no period, no chance of pregnancy, nothing. I was told by a “dr” ( don’t know how to describe their degree) said that she was in depo and it caused her endometriosis and pcos. Don’t get me wrong no period is awesome but having a period means you can get pregnant and I kinda want too. I took the shot for 3 years exactly. I’m very concerned about the coming off side effects. Ladies be careful getting this shot.

I’ve been off the shot since Dec 2019. didn’t have many symptoms at first, but then started to notice I was gaining weight. which I didn’t mind - but then I started getting these weird acne things by my lip & I never have acne. turned out to be cystic acne, nasty. was told it’s a “rare side effect” coming off. that was an intense amount of pain, lips swollen for 3 weeks, about 4 total around my mouth - super embarrassing. been spotting off and on for months. not intentionally trying to get pregnant but scary it can take up to 2 years..

Hi ladies, I had my last depo shot just over a year ago. I have only had one period in that time... I believe it was about 2 and a half months ago. Nothing since, not even spotting. I been on the depo shot since I had my son November 2015 I haven't had a period since I had been on it. I last took the shot February 2020 & decided to not take the shot in May I have been feeling sick since nauseaus throwing up dizziness and weak. I went to emergency room in June because I started feeling worst they ran all kinds of tests on me and told me that my potassium was very low. Now it's July and I'm still feeling nauseated and sick I took a pregnancy test and one is positive and one it's negative. I don't know what's going on.

I've just now at 2 month OFF the depo and am bleeding quite heavily for 2 days now with severe cramping, some nausea, and occasional dizziness. I stopped using the depo shot (my first injection was November 2019) in May 2020 due to the bloating, extreme moodswings, bouts of depression, back pain, headaches, and -most of all- the way it intensified my already socially crippling anxiety. I had unprovoked panic attacks at least twice a week and 4 times at most. The nurse wanted to switch me to another form of birth control but I decided to just get off birth comtrol all together. I had the Mirena IUD in July (one month after a miscarriage) and bled for 2 months straight quite heavily. Due to severe abdominal pains that interrupted my ability to function, I switched to the shot and proceeded to bleed for another month before my period stopped entirely. What I have now started with spotting but got heavy within 24 hours. It seems like a regular period despite being very very painful. I've experienced weight gain (probably from increased appetite) and more bouts of depression. The panic attacks atleast are far and few between but the anxiety itself is back to what I have managed for over a decade now. The moodswings are still bad (my poor fiancee, he has went through the ringer) but not nearly as bad as on the shot. I literally wanted to pull my hair out and felt like my emotions were launching in all directions. I felt crazy. The way I had with my 2 pregnancies. I am still very bloated and have hot flashes. I habe also tried the pills, years before this, and have concluded that my body just isn't compatible with birth control. Oh, and I NEVER had acne in my life until I started the shot. My skin and hair was dull and lifeless and thin. My hair has thickened some since stopping and my skin looks a little better but it still feels as if I am recovering from the shot. Because it messed up my body so bad, it definitely feels like I am going through a "recovery" hormonally, physically, and mentally.

I started the Depo as my first birth control, I was by my doctor that I shouldn’t have gone on the pill because of my family history of blood clotting. She than soon gave me the option for depo and I took the chance without understanding what it was going to do. I had about 2 injections taken every 3 months as directed on time, I never had my period whilst being on the injection as it’s now becoming more concerning. I than started the injection again after 5 months without it, I felt better being on the injection with my moods and felt more responsive to life. After getting the other injection several months later I have not had another appointment since and it’s been 5 months past my due date and still haven’t had my period. All together it’s been a year and a half since I haven’t had my period being on and off the depo injection. I seen my doctor about it and she got me straight through with an ultrasound and haven’t had any results, so in that case I thought everything was fine. But it’s been several months later since I had the ultrasound and my side effects are getting worse, as I’ve noticed I’m starting to put on the weight I had before starting my injection, I feel extremely drained and lack motivation with getting awful cramps here and there. What should my next step be to do as not having my period is really concerning me being at a young age.

Hi all I was on deposit from ages 14 to 20 stopped it and got pregnant with my only child the 4th month after last shot then after giving birth in 2007 went back on shot before left hospital and am still currently on it today 2020 but when I did stop it the first time to have my daughter I bleed heavy non stop the entire time even after pregnant I had to periods the first two months and all 11 of the pregnancy tests I took care back negative.......all 11 tests....by the time I found out I was pregnant I was 3 months along and almost hospitalized for malnutrition because at 3rd month the entire month I could not stop vomiting it was a nightmare but well as I said I am currently still on depo now after I had my kid 2007 but want to stop taking it but am afraid

I was on Depo for 15 years (age 15 to 30). I don't want children but decided to stop back in April to see if it would help alleviate feelings of depression, anxiety and facial excema. My period returned in July (3-4 months after stopping) and seems normal (I have always had a relatively heavy period) other than skipping once, giving us a pregnancy scare and my last period started with a full day of very very painful cramps.

What really concerns me is the weight gain. To give you an idea, I am a dietitian by trade and a recreational runner. I have been ramping UP my running mileage because I am training for some races and gaining weight at the same time, somehow. I've gained 10 lbs, all the while increasing my physical activity substantially...

I had my last shot just under 4 years ago.

We have been trying dor a baby for 3 and a half years with still no sucess. I have read so many storied about people witht he same difficulties after being on this.

I really would avoid this and use an alternative, even if you currently have no plans for a baby at the moment. You never know what the future holds and when you may decide to start a family. Dont let the depo effect you like it has myself and many others.

So I was on Depo for 2 years. My last shot was due July 11, 2019. I didn’t get my shot and decided to get off of depo because I would have a period for 2 months and 1 month I wouldn’t have a period. I know some women it takes 4 months up to a year to get pregnant and some women get pregnant right away. I had unprotected sex on July 24th 2019. I know some women get after affects after stopping Depo. Lately I’ve been extremely emotional and crazy. I get nauseous sometimes. My boobs feel really sore at times, I assumed it was the after affect of depo. Until exactly 14 days after I had unprotected sex, I experience very tiny amount of spotting. Just enough like when you wipe with toilet paper. The next day my discharge went back normal which is white/clear. I got small cramps. It seemed like implantation bleeding. I took a test or came out negative. It’s been about 20 days. Is it possible I could I be pregnant??

Hello, thought I would share my story for women in the same boat, coming off Depo in the hopes they will be able to get pregnant in the future. I was on the shot consistently for almost 10 years- my entire 20's. Now that I am in a serious relationship I started thinking about the next few years and starting a family. My OB-GYN had told me that you must be off the the shot for TWO years in order for them to be able to determine if you may have fertility issues or if your inability to become pregnant was a result of the lasting effects of Depo. So I thought "get off now, then in two years if you are ready for a baby you won't have to wait a potential of another two years." I also heard horror stories of women becoming infertile so I was very worried. WELL let me tell you, my last shot was October 2018 which as you all know lasts for 3 months (December 2018). I got pregnant about ONE month later. Unfortunately, my body was not able to support the pregnancy and I miscarried. I believe this to be from the effects of Depo thinning the lining of the uterus. I now plan on getting on a pill form of birth control and getting my period regulated and hopefully on a good cycle so I'm ready when the timing is right. I loved the Depo shot when I was on it; no periods for me was a big bonus. I will say that my breasts definitely got smaller when I was on the Depo (hormonal side effect maybe). If you are worried about weight gain please understand that its attributed to the increase in appetite, you will not gain weight unless you change your eating habits! This is clearly defined in the side effects of the drug. Best of luck for whatever path you are on.

I was in depo for about a year of end of April 2018 because I didn’t get my period due to stress and my period always been wired seen I was young so that’s normal to me. While I was on depo I had some what side effects but it wasn’t bad when I got my 4th shot of feb 2, 2019 two weeks was fine till I Experiencing major side effects!!! That I didn’t know what was going on till I was talking my tias n cousin that was on brith control even women I didn’t knew luckly I got some answers they all told me everything will be ok it’s take about 2-3 months for some side effects to wear off . For maybe 1 half months or 2 going I was in deep Depression and anxiety n crying everyday, getting crazy thoughts that were very very sacred for me , panic attack, hot flashes, I never in my life experience this before. I been helping my self out eating healthy n Exercise more. To get my hormones back even my period I’m praying everyday to get my energy tbh I better much better then I was before I still have it but I lm getting better then ever please don’t get the shot .and don’t get on Medication it’s will be 10x worse . I was on Depo for one shot, stopped due to it making me super emotional. The past year has been hell, and Depo is the only constant. The first 6 months, no regular period, moody, very very sore breast, and freezing cold at all time. I’m past a year not and still am cold, tired, bloated, weight gain, depression/anxiety. I’ve gone to my doctor multiple times and did not think to get my hormone tested, I believe in have an estrogen balance from my body trying to balance itself out after Depo. I've been on the shot for around 6 or 7 years. I was anemic and my period was so heavy I was bleeding way to much. Honestly I didn't do any research on it when I got on it, an have never had any of the bad side effects. Maybe a little weight gain but I eat a lot, too!

Only downside I am now realizing is how long it takes women who were on it for years to have a baby. I've been off it 6 months and still no sign of period (I know it can take up to 18 months) Just wish I knew that sooner so I could have stopped it sooner

I got the first sign of my cycle June 30 and in all honesty, it hasn't stopped since then. It will lighten up like spotting only to start all over again. I've had horrible mood swings going from sad to mad in minutes. Sometimes I'll have heat rush through my body as if I were going through menopause. If I knew then what I know now I would've NEVER started Depo. My body is going through so many changes I can't keep up with the side effects anymore. My periods have been very irregular and I'm concerned. I got my first period a few weeks after my last shot wore off. I had a 37 day cycle between my first and second period, a 27 day cycle between my second and third period, a 33 day cycle between my third and fourth period and now I'm on day 42 of my next cycle and nothing. My boyfriend pressured me into getting the shot because I was lacking on taking my pill. I really didn't want to because my sister had taken it and had very bad side effects. I got it in April 2018, and right away I felt it changing my body. The bleeding started within two weeks. By the second month my body was in sooo much pain and I had acne; which I've never had. I get random tingling shots of pain down my left arm constantly, I have hot flashes, dizzy spells, my eyesight has gotten worst on the shot, I'm very moody and angry a lot. After feeling all these things I looked up the side effects because something wasn't right only to see everything was evidence of the depo side effects. My Dr. told me that there's no side effects but bleeding. I honestly think she was just trying to get me to take it because of me lacking on taking pills. Other things I've had is restless legs, back pain, headaches, just over all horrible feeling. I became so weak and sore, I quit going to the gym which made my third month June(current) worst. Not going to the gym due to lack of energy made my body hurt worst than I've ever felt. This past month my restless legs have been silent, but I'm extremely tired and sleep a lot, A LOT more than I should. I have no motivation and the best way to describe it is picture yourself running in water combined with running into the wind. The bleeding caused me to become very anemic, and its been hard to try and treat it because I keep bleeding! I do get random episodes of depression and there's no reason way and its extremely frustrating. Also my bones hurt, they crack a lot, even bones in my hands at the slightest movement cracks! My joints hurt and certain movements cause them to pop out and crack. I have been very miserable and honestly not going to get a second shot. People have said that the first shot is the worst but I don't care I'm not going to wait out another 3 months to see if this shit quits happening. I'm hoping to go back on the pill and this time I'm not going to let a busy life get in the way of a daily pill. I'm very angry and disappointed that there will be prolonged said effects after stopping the shot because I just want it to be over!!! It makes sense it may have worked for other females because everyone is different, and I'm not the one it works for.

Refused to stop even after surgery&family history related DVT/PE 15 years ago. Last September, my doctor&hubby talked me into "getting fixed" due to my age, time on&newly developed total lack of sexual wants. My poor, dear, sweet, sexless hubby is still all the above...why??? Because as of December, I've NOT bled a total of 10 days...my calendar looks like a government document, all blacked out!! I figured I'd have either no bleeding(menopause is your friend)or a little over bleeding due to my body trying to figure itself out. Who knew my body was so confused tho??? I understand my story is completely opposite of wanting babies after Depo, I'm a grandma of a wonderfully monsterous 2 year old boy, but I'm hopeful somebody will read this&know someone who has delete with this issue. Seems like a lot of misunderstanding and lack of good information from Dr.s. Please do more research!! I was very fortunate to find an amazing Dr that other Doctors still say they never heard some of things he told me, that I know are absolutely true. mostly related to longterm use. I started using it before they said you shouldn't be on it more than 2 years at a time. So, the first time I was on it for 10 years. Absolutely loved it! Spotting does occur for a long time when starting. Probably a lot of spotting the first 6 months, then gradually went away altogether. So if you are only trying it for 9 months and that is your only issue, I would have powered through that.

By the way, brown blood just means its old. Depo stops your cycle, so you don't get a new layer of blood. That's why it's brown.

After several years, I started spotting again. The doctor said that my lining was too thin to keep the remaining blood on the wall, so they put me on a different drug for a short time to fix that. It made me funky smelling while I was on it, but it worked and never experienced that again.

The main thing I experienced that Doc's don't seem to know about is pain with sex. This is due to reduced stretchiness after longtime use. I went off of it for a couple years and then got endometriosis. Doctors felt the depo had been holding it at bay, so they put me back on it for many years. Getting into my 40's, I wasn't comfortable risking my bone density. So, they put me on the Mirena IUD. You can now get it even if you haven't had kids. The jury is still out on it, but so far, so good. What I've experienced being off of Depo, I've lost almost 20 pounds. I did start eating healthier and less, but not significantly enough for this much loss in 6 months. And for my age, really happy with it! Also, I had excessive sweating and never thought it was related to Depo. That has seemed to go away for the most part. I was just about to take drastic measures, so I am really relieved I found out it was just a side effect. I highly recommend depo if you have endometriosis. It is wonderful. Overall, depo seems to work very well for people or they react pretty poorly. If you don't need it for health reasons, a different method of birth control would be my suggestion. I was on it for 15-20 years all together and it worked great for me, but why risk it if you don't have to.

So my experience cannot be broken down into exact time increments, however, I'm still able to come to an absolutely certain conclusion: my periods or "spotting" as it is nicely put, have not stopped throughout my entire experience on depo. I wouldn't call what is happening to my body a period, but spotting seems almost too... underwhelmed of a word. I have tried depi twice, both times for roughly 9 months each with a year long pause in between. Do not ask me why I decided to try the contraceptive again after my first experience. From a week into getting the shot, spotting would start. And then throughout the entiiiiire first shot (3 months) the spotting was constant. I thought that the second shot would get things in order and the spotting/periods would stop, but they never did. Each and every day whether it be a thicker darker discharge, or on some days a healthy looking bright red discharge, the bleeding never stops. Its extremely disappointing seeing as this is my second time trying it and its the exact same experience again. Sigh. Now heres another majorly unfortunate part:::: the spotting and irregularities continued for at least 8 months after coming off the shot. Regular periods? What are those? When I finally started getting regular periods again possibly an entire year or more after getting off of depo the first time, I stuck with it for only a few months. But then another boyfriend came along and I'm back to the easiest and cheapest contraceptive to keep track of. Once every three months for a portion of the price of the pill. Sigh again. How silly was I. Anyways, it has been a month since I have given up depo provera for good, for the rest of my life. The bleeding and spotting continues. The acidity of the discharge is insane, the majority if it is a thick dark brown type. Its a good day when I see bright red.... its a glimmer of a once familiar regular period. Anyways :/ My main hope with this comment is that maybe a girl like me with similar side effects will read this and hope she isn't the only one. Unfortunately for me I'm yet to find a comment that is similar to my experience.

I got on Depo for the first time June 2017 I was bleeding for the whole three months I did not get back on that shot because ive experience the worst acne something I never dealt with , gain 30 pounds from then till now March of 2018 coming up off it was the worst I really thought something was wrong with me ,my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant since September nothing until bout a week ago I found out I’m 6 weeks pregnant but I’m spotting so I’m being very careful I would not recommend this shot to anyone

I just stopped in January 2018, the best decision.

I had terrible rash over 6 months, going through all allergies tests what became negative. The 5th doctor mentioned my rashes can be hormonal changes. I’m still on antihistamines and I’m very angry and I’m trying to tell anyone my story. I had few allergies shock swallowing face/hands, 2x unconscious with rash all over my body, pain in my liver etc. I had to beg for a liver function test as I felt so bad. Anyway it’s over now, last two months no rashes but I’m waiting for my period. I would NOT recommend to anyone to use this specially in young ages. I would recommend keto diet what helping me control my mood/weight and probably thanks for keto not become mad.
