Garage Door Opener Battery Need Replaced? Here’s a Guide to Doing It Yourself

By on March 8, 2021 in Blog

There’s nothing more annoying than the chinese-water-torture-type ominous beep, warning you when any number of household electronics are about to die. While we’re more familiar with the aggravating chirp of a smoke detector or carbon monoxide detector, your garage door opener sends signals this way too — time to replace the backup battery in your garage door opener! This is a task that can easily be done yourself, following the instructions below, which apply to Craftsman, Chamberlain and Liftmaster garage openers.

Stop the beep!

You can order a backup battery replacement on Amazon. And while you wait for it to arrive, there’s even a way to silence the warning tone. Simply unplug the unit from the ceiling, disconnect the battery, and plug the unit back in. This will now stop the chirping until you get around to replacing it. Hopefully the arrival of that Amazon package will remind you of this task, so that you don’t let it slip your mind.

A 10-15-minute task

All you will need for this 10-15-minute task is a stepladder, Phillips screwdriver and gloves. First, unplug the garage opener unit from the outlet. Remove the light lens (usually a frosted, plastic covering), by pressing the two tabs found on each side. Remove the lightbulb that blocks the compartment cover, and remove the Phillips head screw from the battery compartment door. Use the wires to pull out the old battery and disconnect the wire from the terminals. Put the new battery into the compartment and reconnect the wires, red to red and black to black. Push the battery in the rest of the way, and replace the compartment door. Next replace the Phillips head screw, the lightbulb, the light lens, and plug the garage door opener back into the ceiling. You’ve now put the beeping to an end, and ensured your garage door opener will be backed up by battery power in case the power goes out.

When to Replace Your Garage Door Opener Battery

If your LiftMaster garage door opener comes with a battery backup system, it is easy to know when the battery is too weak and needs to be replaced.

Usually, batteries in garage door openers should be replaced every one to two years. However, one of the telltale signs that you need to change the battery is a beeping sound.

Of course, most battery backup opener models from LiftMaster make a beeping sound if:

  • The garage door opener is running on battery power.
  • You’ve programmed the garage door to close using a timer feature.
  • There’s an obstacle preventing the garage door from closing.

Still, you can easily tell when a beeping sound means it is time to replace the battery. Simply check the battery status LED on the garage door opener if you hear a beep. The battery status LED will turn a solid red, indicating that you need to change the battery.

You might not need a new battery if the battery status LED flashes orange. In that case, simply plug in the garage door opener to a main power source to charge the battery.

If you’re sure it is time to replace the battery, grab the tools listed below and follow the steps in this quick guide.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Screwdriver for opening and closing the battery compartment
  • Ladder (preferably a stepladder) for accessing overhead garage door opener
  • Safety goggles and gloves for protection while working with the battery compartment

If you’ve determined it is time to replace the battery in your garage door opener, the following simple steps will help you accomplish the task.

These steps work for all LiftMaster garage door openers, no matter the model. These instructions are tailor-made for overhead garage door openers, so it is usually best to consult your product’s instruction manual if your opener is different.

Step 1: Disconnect the Opener from the Power Mains

Although your old battery might be very weak or dead, it is still important to disconnect the garage door opener from the power mains before accessing the battery.

To do this:

  • Grab a ladder and place it underneath the garage door opener.
  • Climb the ladder and unplug the power cord of the garage door opener.

Step 2: Access the Battery

With the garage door opener disconnected, it is safe to access the old battery. You’ll need a screwdriver to do this. Here’s how:

  • Open the light cover on the garage door opener to access the battery compartment.
  • Grab your screwdriver and remove the screw on the battery compartment cover to access the old battery.
  • Remove the battery from the compartment and gently pull the red and black wires from the battery terminals to disconnect them.

Step 3: Install the New Battery

Next, install the new battery in the garage door opener. Be sure to use the correct battery for your LiftMaster model. Consult the product’s manual if you’re unsure.

To install the new battery:

  • Connect the wires from the battery compartment to the terminals on the battery, making sure to attach the red and black wires to their matching colored terminals.
  • Insert the new battery into the compartment.
  • Check to be sure that the battery wires are not pinched.
  • Replace the battery compartment cover and screw it shut.
  • Close the light cover of the garage door opener.

Step 4: Charge the New Battery

It is important to charge the newly installed battery. The charging time is usually 24 hours for a typical LiftMaster garage door opener.

To charge the battery:

  • Plug the power cord of the garage door opener to the power mains.
  • The battery status LED on the opener will blink green, indicating the battery is charging.
  • The battery is fully charged when the battery status LED on the opener turns solid green.

Step 5: Test the Battery

Lastly, you should test the battery to make sure it is working as expected. This means you should cut off the power supply from the mains and operate the garage door opener using the wireless keypad or remote.

Here’s how to do this:

  • Climb the ladder and unplug the garage door opener from the power mains. When the garage door opener is running on battery, the battery status LED will glow solid orange.
  • Activate the garage door opener using the remote control if you have one. Alternatively, you can use the keypad.
  • Your garage door should open and close as usual if the battery is fully charged. The garage door will run slowly, and the battery status LED will flash orange if the battery is low.
  • After testing the battery, remember to plug in the garage door opener.
