A YouTuber has found a way to unlock an iPhone without the passcode, which is equal parts scary and impressive.

Have you ever found an iPhone belonging to a stranger in a bar/taxi/the floor and wanted to find out who it belongs to so you can return it to its rightful owner, but have been blocked by a pesky passcode? Or, have you ever locked yourself out of your phone during a memory blank and just had *no idea* what you might've changed your password to? We've all been there.

Aside from hoping and waiting for the phone's owner to make contact somehow (or, er, hoping a memory might come to you,) there's not a lot you can do in that situation. Until NOW, that is, after a YouTuber has discovered a sneaky little hack which allows you to access the phone without using a four or six digit code to gain entry.

It's worth noting that we tried the trick a number of times, and although we were OVERWHELMED that it worked the first time, the phone seemed to wise up, so it didn't work so smoothly. But it's worth a try nevertheless, in case you've accidentally locked yourself out of your phone or need to get into someone's device for emergencies.

Also, it's worth nothing people might be using this iPhone unlocking hack for the wrong reasons, so perhaps it's only a matter of time before Apple wise up to it and stop it working.

So here's how you do it, courtesy of YouTubers Social Star...

1. Activate Siri by saying 'Hey Siri' or clicking the home button.

2. Ask Siri, 'What time is it?'

3. Once the clock app has popped up, click the world clock icon to add another clock feature. Now tap the 'plus' sign to add it to the display.

4. Now click the 'share' button, before selecting to write a new message. Use the virtual keyboard to select the 'To' field, before asking Siri to 'Create a new contact' by tapping the 'plus' button again.

5. Siri will provide an 'Add Contact' blank screen, which will allow you to provide text, in the name and details of your new contact. Instead of adding text, click to 'add photo' to your contact from your photo library.

6. From your home media library, hit the home button, return button, or the return key, and you should now have entry into your phone without the password.

But as long as the morally right purposes outweigh the more dubious ones, we'd say it's useful to know. Whether that means accessing a phone book in emergencies (although hopefully everyone has their emergency contacts on) to to relocate an owner with their lost phone.

How to unlock an iPhone synchronised to a Mac or PC

Apple have also published a way to unlock your iPhone without the passcode on their website. The method includes This process requires plugging your iPhone into a computer (Mac or PC), putting it in recovery mode and restoring the iPhone.

This process deletes your data and settings, including your passcode, giving you access to set up your iPhone again. You can then restore your data and settings from back up, or set your phone up as a new device and download any data you have stored in iCloud.

How to unlock an iPhone synchronised to iCloud

This will also involve restoring and wiping your iPhone, before late packing it up from iCloud, but it's worth it if you really can't remember the password.

Use your iCloud login details to sign into your Apple ID on another device. Click 'Find My iPhone' and select the iPhone you want to wipe and later restore. Click 'Erase iPhone', enter your Apple ID password and phone number, before erasing the phone. *Hopefully* you've got the latest version of your phone backed up your phone to iCloud before wiping it, so you can then restore the information.

Over the years iPhones and iPads have been plagued on many occasions by passcode bypasses – a secret method that allows an attacker to unlock your iOS device and access your private data.

It would be nice to think that as we’re now up to iOS 10 that Apple would have prevented such bypasses from working once and for all. But no such luck – for users who have left Siri enabled from the lockscreen at least.

Here is how an attacker could break into your iPhone, even if you have a passcode or Touch ID turned on.

First of all, they need physical access to your switched-on device.

Then, they need to know your phone number. Now, they might know your phone number because they’re an acquaintance of yours, but even if they don’t it’s not a problem. Because all they need to do is activate Siri by holding down the iPhone button’s and ask “Who am I?”

Siri helpfully tells you the phone number being used by the device.

With that information you’re only a few steps away from accessing the owner’s personal photographs, address book and messages.

1. Call the targeted phone.

2.On the targeted phone, click the Message icon and choose to send a custom message as a reply to the incoming call.

3. Tell the phone, via Siri, to “Turn On VoiceOver”. VoiceOver is a built-in iOS feature that provides a gesture-based screen reading functionality to visually-impaired users.

4. Return to the message screen and double-click on the bar where the contact info is displayed, and immediately click on the on-screen keyboard. This may take multiple attempts to get the timing right, but you will know you’ve succeeded when you see the “Photo” icon and other options slide in from the side above the keyboard.

5. You can ask Siri to disable VoiceOver at this stage (because it can be quite irritating!), and after typing characters into the top bar you should be able to access contact details, and create a new contact.

6.Rather than add a new contact’s details, select the “Photo” icon. You should now be able to choose Add Photo and find that you have access to the targeted device’s photo gallery. Selecting contacts on the device should reveal past messages that have been exchanged with the phone’s owner.

So much for it being locked…

As the video points out, the passcode bypass works on iPads just as well as iPhones running the latest version of iOS.

Chances are that Apple will release a security update in due course to shut down this latest passcode bypass, but it would be a brave man who placed money on Apple never suffering from a similar security goof in future.

My advice, therefore, is that you should simply disable Siri on your iDevice’s lockscreen. You can do that by going to Settings / Touch ID & Passcode / Disable Siri on the Lockscreen

Of course, *not* having Siri available when your iPhone is unlocked can be an inconvenience. But remember it’s an even bigger inconvenience for someone who is trying to break into your Apple gadget to find out who you have been communicating with, or snoop on your private photos.
