Sexual lubricant, when made well and with healthy and natural ingredients, is a wonderful aid for more pleasurable sex that involves penetration. “Choosing a lube that has all-natural and organic ingredients will prevent exposure to chemicals and harsh irritants that many lubes contain,” explains Louise Burdett. “Glycerin or silicone-based lubes can also leave you feeling sticky or tacky afterwards which is very unpleasant.”

1. Be liberal with your lube. Less isn’t more in this situation—even when your body produces a lot of natural lubricant. Be liberal with the liquid, and keep the bottle nearby during sex.

2. Choose a lube that works for you. Research a brand and the product’s ingredients; not all lubes are created equal. Look for high-quality oils and, as Louise Burdett states, “you should always use a lube that you are completely fine with getting in your mouth!”

3. Be gentle with yourself and your partner, especially when trying out lube for the first time. Always ask for consent and check in regularly to ensure you both feel safe and comfortable. 

4. Lube isn’t limited to intercourse. Remember, sex isn’t limited to penetration. Use your lube for foreplay, during massages and tantric sex, or with your personal pleasure device.
