NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A federal jury convicted a Newport News man on several drug charges.

As-Samad Haynes, 41, was convicted for the following:

  • Conspiring to distribute fentanyl more than a kilogram of heroin
  • Distributing fentanyl resulting in two overdoses
  • Possessing firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking
  • Possessing those firearms as a convicted felon

According to court records and evidence presented at trial, Haynes conspired with others to distribute heroin and fentanyl from 2017 until his arrest in November of 2020. 

Haynes reportedly distributed fentanyl to two people which resulted in the death of one and seriously injured the other. At the time of his arrest, Haynes was found in possession of an assault rifle, tactical shotgun, and semi-automatic handgun, which he used in furtherance of his drug trafficking.

Haynes faces a sentence between 25 years and life imprisonment when sentenced on Sept. 7, 2022. 

Four adults and five teens were arrested after a Newport News drug bust.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Nine people have been arrested after a drug bust in Newport News on Thursday.

Newport News Police was called to the 800 block of Taylor Avenue around 4 p.m. after someone complained about drug and gun activity in the area.

Officers were sent to the 600 block of 16th Street where they could immediately smelled marijuana coming from inside an apartment.

While investigating, officers made contact with several subjects inside the residence, and marijuana was recovered. 

Detective obtained a search warrant, and officers were able able to recover crack cocaine, marijuana, six firearms, digital scales, and packaging materials.

Phyllis Wesley said she was at the house yesterday during the search. She said the apartment belongs to Kirby, and she was over there to help.

“I know they didn't smell marijuana because I was over here yesterday cleaning, and it smelled like bleach and Fabuloso,” Wesley said.

Police say no one admitted to owning any of the drugs or guns. Eight of the nine people arrested now all facing the same gun and drug charges.

Wesley said police arrested her son and niece, but she was completely surprised. She claims police were rough with her son, and she plans to press charges.

“Who knows who put it there, I don't know,” Wesley said. “I don't know what goes on, I didn't know they were in that room.”

Kirby, Royal, and Worrell are all in jail without bond. The three of them are back in court on August 22nd at 10 a.m.

  •  Alisha Kirby, 25, of the 600 block of 16th Street in Newport News (PWID Schedule I or II Drugs, PWID Marijuana, and Possession of a Firearm with Schedule I or II Drugs)
  • Rakawn Turner, 23, of the no hundred block of Blackmore Drive in Hampton (Summons for Possession of Marijuana)
  • 17-year-old male juvenile (PWID Schedule I or II Drugs, PWID Marijuana, and Possession of a Firearm with Schedule I or II Drugs)
  • 17-year-old male juvenile (PWID Schedule I or II Drugs, PWID Marijuana, and Possession of a Firearm with Schedule I or II Drugs)
  • 16-year-old male juvenile (PWID Schedule I or II Drugs, PWID Marijuana, and Possession of a Firearm with Schedule I or II Drugs)
