Drinking 4 litres of water a day benefits

We all know we should drink plenty of water, yet most of us struggle to reach the recommended two litres a day. Although it is virtually tasteless - depending on where you live in the UK - a great majority of us don't drink enough of it, and some avoid it altogether.

However the evidence has been clear for some time, drinking the right amount of H2O a day boasts incredible health benefits. Now a Cheshire landlord's test aims to cement that idea.

50-year-old Doran Binder threw himself into a self-imposed experiment to see the effects of more water on the body. He currently drinks a staggering four litres of water each and every day and is five months into the challenge, which he now describes as a "lifetime commitment".

Doran said: “For me, to be going into my fifties and understanding the importance of hydration on my body, the impact that has on my body, my health, my wellbeing, my fitness, my weight, my cognitive ability, my sleeping, my hay fever, my skin, my sexual performance, my constipation (or non-constipation), the list is absolutely shocking and I feel so happy that I discovered this completely by accident.

"We can function dehydrated, but when you rehydrate the benefits are unbelievable.” Doran, who is the founder of Crag Spring Water and qualified water sommelier, outlines the changes he has experienced to both body and mind:

No hay fever

“This will be music to the ears (and eyes and nose) of those struggling with unmanageable hay fever symptoms this year, but I can honestly say that this year I have had no hay fever symptoms at all.

“Last year my hay fever was so bad that I thought I had Covid for about six months, I felt terrible, I had a temperature. I kept on doing Covid tests and it was negative and in the end the doctor came to the conclusion that it was hay fever. A few people I work with have also been experimenting with more water and there are now four of us that have had no hay fever whatsoever this year.”

Better sleep

“You might have thought that upping my water intake would disrupt my sleep. I thought I would need to get up to go to the bathroom more frequently in the night, but I can honestly say I’ve never slept better. I wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the day every morning and getting out of bed is easy because I’m so well rested.”

Weight loss

“From beginning this challenge to now I have lost over 4.5kg without really trying. It’s amazing really that when I have been drinking more water, my body is able to fuel itself much more efficiently. I hardly feel hungry at all these days, I often forget to eat. That’s not something I would advocate as an approach to dieting of course, however it does prove that often when we’re eating during the day it’s often not food that our body is craving. It is water.”

Sexual performance

“One of the most surprising positives I have seen is improvements in my sexual performance, something which, as a near 50-year-old, is a real bonus. It makes sense when you think about it, water helps raise your blood volume ensuring good blood flow to all areas of the body. I have read that there is a higher chance of impotency if the body is dehydrated, so this makes perfect sense to me.”

Less aches and pains

“This could be again down to blood flow ensuring the body is able to heal itself properly and the fact that water can cushion the joints, but I don’t feel aches and pains like I used to. I always thought that achiness and stiffness came with age, but it appears not, it comes with dehydration.”

Better digestion

“Having researched this water helps to break down and process food and keep the digestive system moving. I have noticed a difference for the better. I’m less bloated after meals and don’t ever experience heartburn or indigestion and I’m much more regular.”

Better Skin

“My skin is glowing, I am full of energy and having lost a little weight, I look and feel the best I have in years, better than in my twenties that’s for sure!”

The health benefits are incredible, he says

Sharp mind and increased energy

“I also feel like I have an inner and outer glow, which sounds a little silly, but it’s so true. It’s like water is fuelling me. Seventy percent of our body is water. Just a 5% drop in body water will cause up to a 30% loss of energy in the average person. It’s scientifically proven that we’re impowered by water! I feel sharp and really alert, there is no sluggishness at all, even in the afternoon when I used to begin to feel mentally tired and in need of a pick me up.”

Improved vision

“When I wake up in the morning my eyes don’t have that scratchy, dry feeling that they used to. It would always take me a few blinks to get things working properly but that’s a thing of the past. My vision feels better all round too. It’s sharper. I don’t feel the need to blink as much either.”
