I had been on Verizon for about a year now, and I mainly used it for messaging and not calls.

So you can imagine my frustration when my phone stopped working, and I couldn’t reply to important messages from work and family.

However, I wanted to access my messages without my phone, so I checked around and asked Verizon to know what my options were.

I documented everything I found out, and I am compiling this guide to let you know what I found to receive text messages if you are on Verizon without your phone online.

Reading your Verizon messages online is as simple as logging in to your Verizon account, going into the accounts page, and selecting the Text Online option.

Is it Possible to Read Verizon Text Messages Online?

Verizon does allow you to read text messages sent through its network, although you can see messages from the past 90 days and no further.

You can check your call logs for the past 18 months through their website as well.

Verizon has established these limitations on storage periods so that their servers do not fill up.

Viewing Text Messages Using the Verizon Website

Verizon gives you two choices to read your messages online. One of them is using Verizon’s website.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Visit Verizon’s website.
  2. Log in to My Verizon with your credentials
  3. Go to the Accounts page from the My Verizon homepage.
  4. Select Text Online
  5. Read and accept the terms and conditions if asked to.
  6. From the left-hand side pane, select a conversation to view its messages.

If you have a business account, use My Business and follow these same steps detailed above.

You can also start new conversations by typing the mobile number you want to message in the “To:” field.

The maximum number of characters in a single message is 140. You can only send attachments to other Verizon users, though.

Reading Text Messages Using the Verizon App

If you got a hold of a phone and want to see your messages there, first insert the SIM card from your old device into the replacement.

You need to do this to receive a confirmation code that Verizon sends to your number.

Download the Verizon Message Plus app and enter your phone number in the prompt shown.

After you enter your number, Verizon will send you a verification code on that phone number.

Enter the code in the app, choose a nickname, and you are all set!

The app is feature-rich with everything you’d expect from a modern messaging app like emojis, GIFs, HD audio and video calls, and many more.

It also has a Drive Mode to stop distracting notifications and messages while you are driving.

How Many Days Old Messages Can You Read Online?

As I’ve mentioned earlier, Verizon only allows you to read messages from the past 90 days. Call logs can be viewed from as far as 18 months back, though.

Verizon has this limit to remove older messages that may take up space on their server to store newer messages—considering the volume of messages that Verizon handles and stores daily, 90 days of storage is remarkable.

Besides, messages contain personal information and include conversations that must be kept confidential. Therefore Verizon deletes the messages as soon as possible.

Viewing Text History on Verizon

You can view your text logs for up to 90 days and call logs for up to 18 months on the Verizon website.

Just follow these steps to view them:

  1. Log in to your My Verizon account as an Account Owner or Manager.
  2. Find the My Usage section in your account.
  3. Click View Previous Cycles
  4. Go down to the My Bill section and select the previous billing cycle of your messages that you want to see.
  5. Under the Get the details section, choose Data, talk and text activity.

Sending Text Messages Using Verizon Online Tool

If you want to text and read messages without your phone, use Verizon’s, Online Tool. Setting it up is easy and involves logging into your Verizon account as the first step.

After that:

  1. From the My Verizon screen, go to Welcome > Text Online
  2. Accept the terms and conditions if present.
  3. Select the Compose New Message icon.
  4. In the “Type a contact or phone number” field, enter the phone number you wish to send the message to.
  5. Enter the message in the “Type a message or drop attachment” area.
  6. You can add pictures, emojis, music or drop your location with the icons near the message field.
  7. Click send after you have finished composing the message.

A Great Messaging Alternative

If you are easily distracted by your phone but still need to check for messages from work or loved ones, Verizon lets you read and reply to your messages right from your computer. It also lets you know when a Read Report will be sent.

With the addition of checking your call logs, the Verizon website is feature-packed for your every need.

Verizon also lets you send messages with your e-mail address using the @vtext.com address.

Compose the e-mail and use the recipient’s phone number as the e-mail address.

For example, if the phone number is 555-123-4567, type “[email protected]”. The 140 character still applies here. Once you finish typing your message, hit send.
