The red-tailed black cockatoo is a cockatoo species from Australia. The Latin name of the species is Calyptorhynchus banksii. Males of this species are black with some bright red spots on its tail feathers. Females are black with light yellow-orange spots on their feathers, with some light stripes on their chest. They lack the red tail feathers and their crest is smaller than the crest of the male. The bill of males is black and the bill of females in horn-colored.

As Pets

Housing

Arrange a chain link cage with dimensions of 5ftX8ftX12 so that the bird can easily move inside it, without a hassle. The bar spacing should be minimum 1-1½”. Manzanita perches will be good for your bird. These birds have a strong chewing capacity and chew everything around them, so keep some wooden toys and natural branches in the cage without making it cluttered.

Temperature

Keep your pet in moderate room temperatures, away from drafts and cold air.

Behavior and Temperament

Usually, these birds are known for their gentle disposition, rarely causing any problem for their owners. Staying content with foraging toys is not a big deal for them, but when they are outside, placed on furniture, out of their natural instinct, they become curious about the surrounding and try to chew things off. So, to avoid that, keep a playpen in a place where you can keep a watch on your bird.

Feeding

Provide your hand raising pet a pelleted diet along with fruit and nut mix and parrot mix. Whatever veggies and fruits you eat, give it too, but in a fresh condition. Make sure the pet gets required vitamin and mineral through iodine bells and cuttlebones.

Speech and Sounds

We all know that cockatoos have a reputation for being extremely noisy, raucous and difficult to tolerate to some. But these unique members of that family are totally different, and not at all loud. Red-tailed Black Cockatoo owes this to its calm personality. Their natural calls are drawn out “caws” and “kree” sounds, and they often sound cute and goofy. It is a well-known fact that a happy cockatoo with his needs fulfilled will be much quieter in general. When raised from a young age, these parrots can even learn a few words to repeat.

Colors

Like most cockatoos, Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is also simple in its coloring, without a lot of fancy details. But they are still totally different from what you’d expect from the species, and incredibly elegant as well. The males are entirely black, with a unique, fluffy crest on the top of the head. They have two red stripes on the tail.  The females are slightly different. While they are also black, they have yellow stripes on the tail, and subtle yellow and orange shades on the cheeks. Even if it is simple, the black color gives these parrots a graceful and noble look that’s rarely seen in the world of parrots.

Breeding

Red-tailed black cockatoos are difficult to breed in captivity. They require a roomy flight with privacy. Clutch size is typically 1 to 2 eggs.

The nest box should be open on top, 24 inches by 24 inches by 48 inches vertical. The act of chewing a wooden nest box may stimulate reproductive behavior. They should be provided with branches that they might use to line their nest.

Incubation period is approximately 27 to 30 days. Chicks will usually fledge at approximately 10 to 12 weeks of age. Red-tailed black cockatoos can be difficult to hand-rear and should only be attempted by very experienced hand-feeders. Ideally, chicks should be parent reared to avoid imprinting.

Male cockatoos frequently become aggressive toward their mates. While such attacks have occurred with red-tailed black cockatoos this behavior is uncommon. Because of large flights needed for this species, the male should not be clipped as in other cockatoo species.

How much is a Red

Hand-raised birds can be bought for anywhere between $15,000 to $40,000 in the United States, where they are seldom seen in aviculture.

Can you own a Red

Why can't we keep our endangered Red-tails? Current regulations require a specialist permit to keep Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos. This is because of the five sub-species of Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo that occur across Australia, two of these, including our very own South-eastern sub-species, are nationally threatened.

Can red tail black cockatoos talk?

Can they talk? They can repeat a few words, although they are comparatively quiet compared to other cockatoo species.

Can you own a black cockatoo?

These birds are noisy and conspicuous and generally socialise in family groups. The Black Cockatoo has a need for attention that far outweighs any of the other cockatoo species, making this an extremely high maintenance bird and one that is generally not suitable as a pet.
