In the previous review of this series, we discussed the little relevance of Hajime’s classmates to the series so far and how little of an impact they have made in the series so far. The characters have been irrelevant for far too long and have never been given enough attention by the showrunners for the viewership to care. For a baffling reason that is still incomprehensible to me or any other viewer, the show decided to rest an entire arc about betrayal and trust to people who we know nothing about.

How are we expected to be shocked about or react in any manner to them getting betrayed, not being able to trust their own teammates, or even dying in agony as they get pierced by a sword? We don’t know any of their interactions before they came to this world, we don’t know who among them were friends or enemies or who was in love with whom, which was the reason for the current events in the show happening. The entire episode was just them talking amongst each other, all of which was boring because no one knew what was going on.

The show then committed a cardinal sin of storytelling- it tried to establish connections missing from the character dynamics after the fact, and it fell flat on its face. Imagine a random stranger betraying another random small-time member of the cast of a high budget movie, say Avengers Endgame. Would you care if the cast member who was betrayed was only tangentially related to the story and never really was of any relevance to the plot? What if the movie then shifted to the random side character’s perspective for a while? Would you care? Of course, you wouldn’t.

Another problem that Arifureta Season 2 Episode 11 suffered with was predictability. I would not classify what I’m going to write next as a spoiler because everyone and their mothers knew that this would happen. No one would be able to do anything except Hajime because he is the only one strong enough to handle something like this. We know this because the show has established him as a character of immense strength from the start. While this does entail an extremely cool entrance where he displays his strength in this episode, the gap between him and the others becomes that much more obvious.

From Hajime’s arrival to the end, this was an amazing episode featuring some of the best scenes the show has ever done. Everything before it was so mind-numbingly pointless that it brought the overall episode down by quite a bit. The show needs to do what it did when it began and leave Hajime’s classmates behind. They are nothing but hindrances to the show’s plot, and the show’s prior mistakes have left them being unable to recover from this. Let sleeping dogs lie, and let Hajime do all the heavy lifting.

Verdict

Arifureta Season 2 Episode 11 was haunted by the show’s prior mistakes and the mistreatment of Hajime’s classmates, who are as cookie cutter and boring as you can get in this world. It would be better for all parties to go their separate ways.
