Took my 1500 RAM Sport 5.7L/8 speed in for service today and they (and their computer) were trying to tell me I was due for a transmission fluid change at 60K miles. I told them I was under the impression that only applied for the 6 speed, but they insisted it was true for my VIN.

Initially I caved assuming they'd know better, but then I pulled up the owners manual and pointed out this only applies to the 6 speed. The 8 speed is a sealed system and supposedly lifetime maintenance free.

I guess the moral of the story is - don't trust dealerships.

I tried to get a quote from mine; they quoted me for 2 filters and ATF+4 fluid. 8HPs use Mopar 8 & 9 speed fluid or ZF Lifeguard 8 and require the pan to be replaced with the filter as they are one piece.

FWIW ZF specifies a 72,000-90,000 mile interval to change the fluid. Chrysler publishes internally that "Lifetime" means 100,000 miles, which is the interval used by a couple guys who have 300,000 and 400,000+ on these trannies without a rebuild.

The service is easy enough to do, I changed mine at 66,000:

I would be replacing my fluids after 50-60,000 miles. Fluid gets contaminated just like oil, it doesn't last forever.

Transmissions don't have the same combustion residue like engine oil does to contend with, but yes, there still are wear metals from clutches and stuff that need cleaned out. Just like a differential

The zf tranny recommends the lower mileage that the horse recommends. I would not wait for 100000 miles. People who tow have changed at 70000 miles and noticed the magnets were loaded up with fine black material. What is wrong with the lower mileage? It is expensive at 70 or 100 thou. What's the difference? love your truck

I typically do most of my own maintenance but figured I'd have the dealer handle the trans fluid change just because of time constraints. I'm at 71k miles and figured now would be a good time. My local dealer quoted me $800 for the job which caught me offguard. After some research I can tell there's some cost involved but has anyone else gotten similar estimates?

Tranny

I got my 2014 ram sport tranny hot last weekend in the mtns. Took it in to dealer to get fluid changed and he told me $980.00. He said trans pan is part of the filter. He also said it doesn't need changed until 100,000 miles and is totally covered under the 100,000 mile warranty and not to worry about it. My over heat light came on and right back off, he said the OBD didn't show anything weird. Anyway went online and I can purchase the pan a whole lot cheaper and DIY except flushing converter.

Wondering if anyone on this board has any experience with QuantumBlue trans fluid in their 8 speed RAM? I've read testimonials and other forums but was hoping to get some feedback on here.

I've heard of it on some of the Charger and Challenger boards, but there are still relatively few of us who have changed it. There was a guy with an EcoDiesel who had like 300,000 miles on his-not VernDiesel, this guy did similar work but I believe he unfortunately passed away. He changed his with Valvoline MaxLife fluid every 100,000 miles.

For those of you getting quoted $800+ you can do it for $350 yourself with OEM parts and fluid-at least I did. Actually PPE makes a high capacity finned aluminum pan with changeable filters for around the same price, and the replacement filters are about $28.

I just bought a 2015 Ecodiesel with 103,000 miles this week. How do I know if it needs the transmission fluid changed?

You can go to a dealer and see if there is any record of one, but if I couldn't find any evidence I'd go ahead and do one to be safe

Just going to do that. Saw the YouTube video on doing it and I think I'll get my hands greasy.

Changed my pan and fluid at 115k and it was a waste IMO. The fluid was a very slight tinge darker than the new fluid and smelled fine. Almost nothing on the magnets, and the filter looked great. The change and fill procedure is a pain and I didn't see the value in it after I was done.

I did a carfax and saw no record for transmission work so I bought the pan and 6 quarts ZF Lifeguard 8-9 for about $125. I drove home from work, 25 miles and parked it in my driveway and drained it while it was hot. Left it over night to cool and pulled the pan next morning. The original was metal and had a magnet on the drain plug only. The replacement was plastic but had 2 magnets. One of the pan bolts broke putting it on. I left it and drove to Dodge dealership in Simi Valley and wouldn't you know, they don't carry it and the dealership that had it was in San Bernadino, 90 miles away and the cost was $12 for one bolt. So went to the Value Hardware to buy a M6x1 bolt and washer for a lot less. Fluid was dark and the inside of the pan looked clean. Took a little over 5 quarts to fill. After that I installed the running boards and when I had just finished that, low and behold the Amazon delivery truck stopped and delivered the Pedal Commander I had ordered which I then installed. Not bad for a single Saturday and I have owned the truck for 12 days.

I'm about to do mine for the second time now that my truck has about 125,000 miles on it. It looks like the fluid has gone down to about $25/qt, and the filter/pan is around $200.

How often should Ram 1500 transmission fluid be changed?

Most new vehicles are equipped with an automatic transmission. As a result, there's not really much maintenance to perform. Still, most owner's manuals will recommend changing the transmission fluid every 90,000 miles or so.

Does Dodge Ram 1500 need transmission fluid change?

Ram 1500 transmission fluid changes are extremely correct to keep your vehicle's transmission charming and lubricated. If you don't routinely change your fluids at least every 30,000 miles or so, you may find that your Ram 1500 transmission will slip.

What 8 speed transmission is in the Ram 1500?

The 2019 Ram 1500 with the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 uses an upgraded TorqueFlite 8HP75 transmission.

When should I change my transmission fluid ZF?

ZF recommends a transmission oil change every eight years or 50,000 miles, and that's a job you can tackle at home.
