Its under warranty, but it would be easier just to fix it myself if any of you can point me in the right direction. In the mornings, when it is cold, the truck initially starts and engages the locking rear differential. The light on the dash illustrates it and the tires chirp when you turn. I can push and turn the switch a little and hold it there and it will not lock the rear end. Up until today (the coldest it has been by far), the truck would be fine once I fiddled with the switch and I wouldn't have any problems the rest of the day. Today, it never would correct itself and I was having to continuously hold the switch. When I got home, I half way attempted to take the switch out because I felt like it may be something I could adjust. But I was afraid of breaking something as the switch did not come out easily. I really feel like I could tweak it a little and it would be fine. It seems to be that when it is cold (below 60) it locks the rear end. It also only needs a small push on the switch to disengage it. Just in case your rear end starts giving you problems. Nip it in the bud now, before it bites you. Gosh, I have a premium care ESP on my '07, and any time I even think there is a problem, I just take it to Ford and let them diagnose it. I've used the heck out of my warranty -- not lately, but in previous years. And chances are you aren't the only one who having the issue. Let Ford know about it. I have a call into the dealership but that is going to be a huge hassle just for a new switch. Thanks for the other input as well. OTOH if you INSIST on working on it, just ask yourself how much two new axles are going to cost you when it engages on the highway and destroys the gears or breaks an axle. Keep in mind that if you change the switch and that doesn't fix the problem and damage occurs, then Ford and the stealership will have every right to deny warranty coverage to repair anything. This started this AM in my 13 FX4 which is NOT under warranty. At least the 20MPH safety feature works to avoid the exploding diff as implied by other posters...still a hassle in town and not cool when turning right at a stop:-( How do you turn off electronic locking differential?Push the center of the 4WD select knob to manually activate and de-activate the electronic locking differential. An LED on the knob illuminates to indicate the system is activated.
