My guess is
it just takes some time for the oil to get down to the pan. Then when you crank it up, it's getting recirculated again, then as it sits, the oil makes it way back to the oil pan, where it reads full.
That's what I thought. But what got me was the dealership insisted that I put 7.5 qts in it. I left it at 7 qts. What do you put in yours?
Well, I
have a 4.7, mine is 6 quarts. But according to the 2012 Ram owners maual, your Hemi calls for 7 quarts including the filter. Not sure why they would suggest 7.5 quarts. Joined

Dec 17, 2014 I've read on here as well as other forums and in the owners manual that the hemi takes 7qts. Yet every oil change I have done, 7 qts only brings the level up to the bottom or the lower hole of the safe zone. It takes just shy of 8 qts for it to be full. An yes thats checked after running the engine for a few minutes and then letting it sit for several

it sit for several hours. It takes 7 quarts if the oil dip stick does not show full after 7 quarts is added then either you are reading it wrong or there is a problem such as not inserting the dip stick all the way or some sort of manufacturing defect better go to the dealer and ask them why? I would not put 8 quarts in though when changing the oil as its overfilled and could cause engine damage. Joined

7 is the number, unless you have something 'special' going on,, "Full' when cold does not necessarily mean to the top of the hatch marks either ,,, 2015 Ram 2500 Laramie Longhorn Limited CTD Joined Nov 24, 2014 · 1,532

If it is really cold out you might be well below the half way point. I generally fill to the halfway mark, drive the truck, see where it's at, add if needed. Joined

I put exactly 7 Qrts. And am about an inch over the full circle?? Honestly its been years since I checked my oil level between changes. I just drain and add 7 every 6,000 miles. The 5W20 is hard to read, it will show as high on one side of the stick and just right on the other if the oil is new.
