All the other lights (trunk, headlights, stop, reverse)are working fine. I don't know where to start but need to be quick because I don't want the police to stop me again for the same light problem. The grease is just to keep moisture out, and keep the metal from corroding. The bulbs probably look something like this: Just a tiny little bit of grease on the metal contacts should do the trick.

Try checking the fuses in the box under the drivers side dash. I think that the license plate fuse in the interior fuse box. If you are asking, “Which fuse is for the license plate lights?” Your car's license plate lights are powered by a circuit fuse of the 10amp left side parking light, and it is located in the fuse panel in the underhood.
Why is my tag light not working? This could either be a problem with a relay switch, a loose connection or the license plate light has burnt out and needs to be replaced. Most license plate lightbulbs are the same, but you should always check with an auto parts store or contact a professional mechanic to replace the lightbulb with the right one.
How do you fix a license plate light?Method 1 of 2: Replacing a license plate light bulb with a lens cover. Materials needed.. Step 1: Remove the license plate light lens cover. ... . Step 2: Remove the bulb from the socket. ... . Step 3: Compare the replacement bulb to the one you removed. ... . Step 4: Install the replacement bulb. ... . Step 5: Turn the headlight switch on.. How do you disconnect a license plate light?Pull the light bulbs straight out.
Pull the lights straight out from the bases to remove them. If the lights don't come out, look for plastic or metal tabs holding them in place. Press down on them so the light bulbs come loose. You can throw away the old tag lights as soon as you remove them.
