2023 Nissan Altima Overview
This is an exciting time to be in the market for a family sedan as there are so many compelling options available. Two of those are the Altima from Nissan and the Camry from Toyota, and in this article, we’ll compare the 2023 Nissan Altima vs 2023 Toyota Camry and see where each vehicle shines. Let’s begin with what’s new for the 2023 model year. The new Altima now available at Nissan of Salem features a redesigned front end that provides the vehicle a more striking appearance. Nissan has also added new color options, expanded the standard driver assists and added new optional features, such as a larger touch screen. Toyota has also expanded its suite of driver-assistance technologies, and it’s added an optional Nightshade package, which gives the vehicle a sleeker, blacked-out aesthetic.

Both vehicles are four-door midsize sedans. The 2023 Nissan Altima has 111.2-inch wheelbase, a 5.4-inch minimum ground clearance and a 192.9-inch overall length, which is bit more than 16 feet. The 2023 Toyota Camry is quite similar with the same wheelbase length, a 5.7-inch minimum ground clearance and a 192.1-inch overall length. The base Altima has 16-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers, and 17- and 19-inch alloy wheels are available. The base Camry has 17-inch alloy wheels, and 18- and 19-inch wheels are available.

The Altima and Camry both provide seating for up to five. Headroom in both cases is about 38 inches. One way that Nissan distinguishes the Altima is approximately 44 inches of front legroom, which is almost 2 inches more than the Camry. The 2023 Toyota Camry does provide more second-row legroom at 38 inches, but the Nissan affords enough room for most adults at more than 38 inches. The Nissan also offers more trunk space overall, but both vehicles’ trunks are spacious at more than 15 cubic feet. In both cases, you have options like heated seats, a sunroof and even genuine leather upholstery. As for comfort, we think the Altima gets the nod due to having one of the smoothest rides in the segment.
Nissan Altima Mechanical specs
Nissan gives you the option of either front- or all-wheel drive. The standard powertrain pairs a 188-horsepower four-cylinder engine with a continuously variable automatic transmission. The SR also gives you the option of a 236-hp turbocharged engine. The SR includes all-wheel drive if you opt for the standard engine, and the turbo engine comes exclusively with front drive layout. The 2023 Toyota Camry comes standard with a 203-hp four-cylinder that provides similar EPA-estimate fuel economy, but as a number of automotive journalists have reported, acceleration lags behind the competition. Toyota does offer an optional engine but only with the TRD, which is a performance-oriented vehicle.

When comparing the 2023 Nissan Altima vs 2023 Toyota Camry in terms of their base infotainment packages, the Altima stands out because of the 8-inch touchscreen as opposed to the smaller and lower-resolution display in the Toyota. If your budget allows for an upper trim level, Altima comes out in front again for a number of reasons. The first is the 12.3-inch touchscreen. Toyota does not offer a larger touchscreen. The second is the driver-assistance technologies. With the Nissan, you can opt for the second trim level and get just about all of the driver aids plus the Intelligent Ride Control and Intelligent Trace Control. For a similar package with Toyota, you need to step up all the way to the XLE.
Another change Nissan has made for the 2023 Nissan Altima is dropping the top-spec Platinum trim level. You now have four core loadouts to choose from—S, SV, SR and SL—and most of the upgrades that we’re offered with the Platinum package have simply been rolled into the SL. The Altima S is a well-equipped base model that delivers on the best value propositions in the class. The SV provides a smoother ride due to upgrades like Intelligent Ride Control. The SR is a sportier version of the vehicle, and the range-topping SL adds numerous amenities and technologies. Toyota offers four core trim levels as well—LE, SE, XSE and XLE—and similar approach allows for direct comparisons in most cases.
