2005 jeep grand cherokee service electric brake system

  • #1

My wife was at the store the other day when her 05 Grand Cherokee would not restart. The Jeep is an 05 Grand Cherokee with a 3.7L V6, automatic, and all wheel drive, and 52000 miles. This is a slightly modified street Jeep. It was fine earlier then just would not even crank. There is a click when you turn the key but no cranking. The windows won't roll down and fan won't blow. The message center says SERVICE ELEC BRAKE SYSTEM. I tried disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes. I could roll down the windows until I tried to start the truck, then it went back to a limp mode where I could not do anything with the electrical. Had to have the truck towed. Any idea what could cause this? Anyone had this happen?

Got it figured out. Ended up being a battery issue (not enough juice). Replaced the battery and it fired up. So far so good. Got to love the computer controlled BS. This is why I like my simple little XJ.

Ok so I was driving my jeep tonight and started down a hill that had some ice on it and I slid a little bit hit the brakes some to keep it tamed down and from sliding all over the place. Now my service electric brake light is on and when I turn and apply the brake while in motion there is a grinding noise... Dunno what's up with it.. anyone else have this issue? It's a 05 ltd hemi.. 72k miles... Any advice would be helpful.

Grinding noise doesnt sound good.... Your likely going to need to get it into the dealer to find what the service 4wd light is on for. There is a flash for the final drive control module regarding erroneous dtc's causing the "service 4wd" message, that may be all the problem is with that.

As for the grinding when applying the brake, when was the last time the brakes were done?

Many people have reported that clearing the codes they have not come back, so you may not deal with it again, I would suggest not bringing it to ANY shop to inspect for that particular concern until it happens again having cleared the codes they wont be able to determine anything.

Grinding while braking would lead me to believe it is brake related maybe a rock stuck in the caliper or similar... could be wrong but that would be the place to start for me.

If it makes you feel better the service electrical brakes comes on and off in my vehicle all.the time. It doesn't stay on, nor does it throw any codes. I spoke to a mechanic about it, who owns a Jeep and says that it's common for Jeeps to throw this code when you have erratic braking or brake hard but it wasn't an issue if it didn't stay on and wasn't throwing any codes. The other day it was freezing and same as you I went over a patch of ice when I went to brake on the ice my brake started pulsating and what sounded like grinding and when I stepped on the gas I heard my grinding more I was like oh oh that doesn't sound right. So I pulled over to the side of the road, and I looked over the patch of ice and it was pure ice with rough surfaces, I feel bumps and rough road more due to me needing to replace my sway bars and stabilizer links. I remembered before I parked to the side of the road I was backing up into another patch of ice and it was making a grinding braking noise, I went to the back of the vehicle and noticed the ice was cracked, so I concluded that the grinding noise were the wheels braking the ice and the brakes pulsating where because the tires were trying to grip the ice and the tires were sliding. It never made any other sound on smooth road and its been a week it's happened. Oh yeah that same day not to far away from that patch of ice this stupid driver decided to get outta his vehicle by not looking back and swinging his door open on a one way tight street while I was passing by his vehicle. I had to maneuver out of the way real quick so their door wouldn't be part of my grill.nearly hitting a parked car, and when I stopped and looked at him for an explanation he was like oooppps sorry. what a dumbass. Anyway if what I said makes sense just ride and keep close eye on stuff, me personally, mine hasn't been serious after a while of watchful eye I forgot about it, but it's taught me to be an even more careful driver. GOod luck.

the grinding sound is the abs activating. Just do some preventative checking of brake fluid etc. If it continues to occur we will go from there

I also forgot to mention that the mechanic told me usually when the service electrical brake system comes on that it is associated with the ABS kicking in.

Sorry, I need to correct information, I dont know what I was thinking when I read this the first time, "service electronic brake system" is not the "service 4wd system" I was thinking of.

That said, this is an indication of a fault sensed in the system not an indication of ABS kicking in.

^ This is correct. The light is an indicator that something is wrong with the ABS system.

Ive had the code pulled and says I have a fault ABS sensor on one of my hubs. Sensor are cheap/easy to replace I've just never gotten around to it :/ I mean cars never used to have ABS so I figure I may as well see what the "good ole' days" were like haha

SVC ELEC BRK - SVC FWD SYSTEM - Traction Control

I am also getting the Service Electric Brake System and Service FWD. The traction control light and ABS light bling as well. I have read many posts here and other sites. My problem also consists of engine shutting off when this occurs. Engine will turn over and start but will shut down after a few seconds. If I attempt to shift to drive the "D" switched to a "3". I have read a lot of posts that suggest a speed sensor may be bad. Mechanic did not get any codes, It does not happen when driving, only after driving or idling the vehicle. I usually sit in my idling car for appx. 45 minutes a day for my lunch break. 30 minutes later when I start the vehicle again to go home all this happens. It seems if I leave it alone for a while it will be fine. What to do?

Reviving this thread, I am having the same issue as MrRox. ABS Light, TC Light, Service 4wd light, and Service Electronic Brake System Light. Not having the drive and 3 problem thought. Engine almost stalled when these lights came on. Any help is appreciated. Runs and idles strong now.

My Jeep is a 2005 Jeep WK 5.7 Completely stock. Forgot to mention that this occurred after I had to drive a short distance on a full size spare tire that was slightly different than the others.

So I just swapped out my wheel hub assembly on the drivers side and it’s still doing exactly the same problem, weird grinding sound, service electric brake system, TC and abs lights come on. You’re saying the grinding is the abs kicking in?

Did you check the abs sensor wire?

What does it mean when my car says service electric brake system?

Typically, service brake system lights let you know when there's something off with the braking system. In some cases, the lights themselves can malfunction, too — blinking or turning on for no mechanical reason.

What does the ABS light mean on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The ABS light in your Jeep comes on when your vehicle fails a self-diagnostic cycle. When the light is illuminated, your vehicle may not be able to provide certain safety features, like properly signaling the anti-lock brake system.
