Price: We expect the 2023 Ford Maverick compact pickup truck will have a starting price of around $20,000.

The 2023 Ford Maverick proves less can be more, at least when it comes to compact pickup truck buyers who want a versatile vehicle that doesn’t carry an enormous asking price or result in sky-high fuel bills.

Introduced only last year, we don’t anticipate many (if any) changes to Ford’s perky little pickup for the 2023 model year.

With an entry-level Maverick coming in at about $20,000, Ford has priced its smallest truck well below its own midsize Ranger and full-size F-150. Based on the same unibody platform used in the Ford Bronco Sport and Ford Escape SUV, the Maverick’s driving manners could make converts out of anyone who never thought they’d consider a pickup.

From behind the wheel, the Maverick is as easy to drive and as well-mannered as a typical small SUV. The handling is accurate and the ride never proves punishing over rough pavement.

What really helps the Maverick stand out is the fuel economy provided by the standard 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain. This combines a 2.5-liter inline-4 with an electric motor that sends 191-horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

Fitted with this engine and running on a diet of regular-grade gasoline, the Maverick returns an EPA-estimated 42 mpg in city driving and 33 mpg on the highway. That’s impressive for an economy car, much less a small pickup truck!

Optional is a 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 paired to an 8-speed automatic and your choice of front- or all-wheel-drive (AWD). That’s correct, if you want AWD in your Maverick, it means stepping up to this more powerful turbo 4-cylinder. When properly equipped, the Maverick can tow 4,000 pounds – this drops to only 2,000 pounds if you opt for the hybrid engine.

While the cabin is utilitarian and there are plenty of hard plastics scattered here and there, it’s a functional and user-friendly place to spend your time. Adults have plenty of headroom and legroom in either row, while standard features like an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Wi-Fi hot spot, and two USB ports help to make sure the Maverick is keeping pace with the times, technologically speaking.

Anyone venturing off-road will want to consider the FX4 trim that includes underbody skid plates, all-terrain tires, upgraded suspension, and drive modes for mud and sand. This model comes with the optional turbo 4-cylinder and AWD.

While the 4.5-foot cargo bed isn’t exactly expansive – at least by truck standards – it includes a number of clever cargo tie-down cleats and channels to keep cargo in place. About the only truly direct rival to the 2023 Ford Maverick is the similarly new Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Larger and pricier midsize pickup rivals include the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, GMC Canyon, and Ford’s own Ranger.

2023 Ford Maverick Pricing

Look for the 2023 Ford Maverick with front-wheel drive (FWD) and the standard hybrid powertrain to have an asking price of around $20,000. That’s thousands less than what a pickup truck shopper would pay for a midsize truck, such as the Toyota Tacoma or Nissan Frontier.

It’s also several thousand less than the Hyundai Santa Cruz compact truck — though to be fair, the Hyundai comes with more standard features and a classier cabin.

Adding the more powerful 250-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder adds about $1,000 to the Maverick’s price, while AWD nudges this upward by roughly $3,300.

A Maverick in XLT trim with either the hybrid or optional turbo inline-4 commands about $23,000 to $25,000. Add the available Luxury Package that includes popular features like a spray-in bedliner, remote start, heated seats, power-adjustable driver’s seat, and two extra USB ports, and you can expect to pay around $25,000 to $28,000.

The top-of-the-line Lariat trim technically starts at approximately $26,000, though loading on every available option can easily add $10K to the price.

KBB Vehicle Review and Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is commuting efficiently to and from work in the city, keeping your family safe, making you feel like you’ve made it to the top — or that you’re on your way — or making you feel like you’ve finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.)

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.
