did i put the clutch plate in backwards, can you tell?
This is the best photo I have and it is in full resolution. I can not tell if I put it in backwards or not. The reason I ask is I can't remember if I took the info off the guide or how I laid the clutch out on the ground when I took one off another engine and I went back to look at it today and it is laying the opposite way the manual says, which concerns me. I don't want to start up with it install backwards.

That is the link to the full res shot. Wish it were of just the clutch plate and a better angle, but it's all I got. Was considering getting a cam and going in through the clutch fork hole and seeing that way, but I'm just not sure. Any help or input on this? I know, possibly a stupid mistake, but better to be sure now than know for sure later.
I'm thinking the best clue here is if you look next to the alignment tool. Seeing how much of the "spline" section is sticking out.

Clutch disc is between pressure plate and flywheel. Flat side goes towards fly wheel.

Yes, yes. I understand this, but that is the question. What way was it put on. I honestly can't remember and pretty sure it wouldn't be good if it were started up and it were on backwards. At the time, I thought I looked at the one that I took off my old engine, but at i was looking through the manual the other day I saw the diagram again and I'm having a tough time remembering if I looked at the clutch I took of the old engine (I looked at the direction i thought it was on and it is opposite the manual, so it must have gotten turned around somehow when I took it off, meaning I could have put the new one on wrong) or if I went by the manual.

Pull the flex plate back off and give it a look. Like wabbit said, flat side should be towards the fly wheel.

wouldn't that require the engine and tranny to be pulled apart again? The thing is in the truck, mounted, and nearly ready for the key to be turned. The fluids are even in it. This just crossed my mind yesterday. When I looked at something, it triggered

Yes it would. I was thinking it was still on the engine stand.

Yep. I was thinking you could just look at it.
Not with the tranny on there. Going to have to pull it to check.

The best way to find out is to fire her up, make sure you're in neutral. no additional damage will be done by this.
good luck

well at this point, there isn't any damage done. It fits both ways without binding on anything, so it's just sitting in there. Either the wrong way or the correct way, not sure.
I wish it was on the stand. That's why I have that picture up there that is nearly impossible to tell which way it is on, but was hoping maybe there was a super secret clue that someone could find by looking at my "high quality" photo. lol.
I agree with this.....
Couple quick questions on the tranny pull, never done one. Do I have to drain the fluid out of it and do you pull it with the transfer case as well? Does either way change the fluid situation? Just looking for the easiest way to do this. Never done it, what kind of time frame am I looking at?

There is really only one way that thing can go on. From the picture, it looks correct. Get in the truck and try the clutch and go through the gears. If you can I wouldn't worry about it, if you can't then you know you have problems.
The starter hole is on the right side and the guide pin is in the correct spot so...I think your just paranoid.

That is the clutch pressure plate, not the actual clutch. The clutch is between that and the flywheel and it can fit on either way.

When you say clutch plate you really mean the clutch disk. That can go in both ways. As stated, flat part goes towards the flywheel.

Yep, clutch disk. Takin the tranny off now.
Do I need to drain any fluids. I hope to keep the transfer case on when moving it to make things go faster. Any tips?

Uhhhh....
Why do you need to pull the tranny?
The clutch disk can go on anyway, as long as it's lined up.
You got the pressure plate on right, and you have the clutch disk in, so its fine..
No, you don't need to drain fluids.
Just unbolt.
The 8 bolts for the xmember, and the ones on the tranny and engine itself
There really isn't a WRONG
way to put on the pressure plate..
you either have it on, or you got the wrong one.

Not true!
You have to install the clutch disc with the correct sides facing the flywheel and pressure plate. They have 2 distinctly different sides to them. They're not the same on both sides at all. As has been stated the "flat" side must face the flywheel. The side with the protrusion must face the pressure plate. It is possible to install the disc backwards.
Don't believe me? Read the FSM.

That is the reasoning for all this. Wish I would have paid slightly closer attention. Even if it is installed correctly, which I'm doubting right now, I believe my rear main is leaking. Oil is coming from somewhere in there. It was suppose to have been a new rear main, but guess not.

Just drop the tranny but make sure that fork and clip are lined up right, youll probably want a couple of people helping you out to line the tranny back up to also with dropping it

I almost have it out. It's fully disconnected from the engine, but just need to get it down the rest of the way.
Just curious, are you suppose to lower the engine when dropping the tranny? Just seems like you would, but maybe I missed it somewhere. I've got the tranny, transfer and most of the front driveshaft all in one shot. It's been interesting, to say the least.

Lower the engine?
No. Not even if it was possible, which it isn't, should you do that.
