St mary medical center program internal medicine residency

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at St. Mary's General Hospital & Saint Clare’s Denville Hospital

Fully Accredited by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education

Our philosophy is to treat residents more as academics rather than as employees. We strive to provide an atmosphere that is conducive for learning while helping you to reach all the goals and objectives required to train as a physician.

In return, we expect dedication, hard work, honesty, and maintenance of the highest standards. Our aim is to provide you with the best education that will help you to complete your internal medicine training and to help you become a caring, ethical physician who will uphold the high standards of the profession.

Training

Training at the Consortium of St. Mary’s General and Saint Clare’s Denville Hospital will give you the opportunity to have an extensive experience in urban and suburban medicine. Our program will provide a comprehensive clinical experience for interns, and 2nd and 3rd year residents needed for a successful career in internal medicine. We encourage a collaborative academic environment which emphasizes clinical skills, scholarly research, and intellectual pursuit.

Mentorship

Every intern receives a program advisor and mentor to serve as his/her advocate. This faculty member will assist in your learning and development. The mentorship program nurtures both personal and professional growth. Its goal is to strike the ideal balance between clinical autonomy and structural learning for each resident.

Curriculum

The internal medicine curriculum provides general medical care and subspecialty experience through lectures, conferences, and a mix of experience with primary and tertiary patients. This residency provides multiple didactic conferences to fulfill the recommendations of the ACGME. The Internal Medicine residency program at St. Mary Mercy Hospital is a fully accredited three-year intensive training program. The Accreditation Counsel on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited our "new" program in May, 2009. Currently the Internal Medicine Program has PGY 1, PGY 2 and PGY 3 residents.

Internal Medicine is the discipline encompassing the study and practice of health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis, care, and treatment of men and women from adolescence to old age, during health and all stages of illness. Intrinsic to the discipline are scientific knowledge, the scientific method of problem solving, evidence-based decision making, a commitment to lifelong learning, and an attitude of caring that is derived from humanistic and professional values.

The St. Mary Mercy Hospital educational programs overall goals and objectives are to graduate an outstanding, competent, knowledgeable and qualified internal medicine primary care physician, hospitalist or subspecialty applicant. The overall curriculum is primary care orientated with flexibility to accommodate the personal needs of each individual resident. The St. Mary Mercy program fulfills all program requirements from the Accreditation Counsel on Graduate Medical Education, the Internal Medicine Resident Review Committee (RRC) and the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).

Expert Faculty, Successful Residents

I am delighted by your interest in our Internal medicine residency program at Saint Mary’s Hospital. Founded in 1907, Saint Mary’s has been affiliated with the Yale University School of Medicine as a teaching hospital for over 40 years. For more than 15 years, we served as one of three hospitals for the Yale Primary Care Residency Program, and we remain involved in the Yale Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program.

The vast majority of our faculty are Yale faculty members, and we are proud of our educational tradition. Saint Mary’s has produced physicians of the highest caliber, including academic and clinical general internists, medical subspecialists, and both clinical and laboratory investigators. Our residents have been candidates for highly competitive jobs and fellowship positions across the country.

Flexible Training Options

We recognize that our residents have a variety of career aspirations and thus we strive to provide flexibility in training options. Our program provides an excellent balance between inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences and didactic activities. We have created a top-notch academic experience in a friendly, community hospital environment. In addition, our residents can choose from multiple elective experiences at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
