Spare Tire Key
So here is my situation. When i bought my truck from the dealership there was no key in the glove box for lowering the spare tire. At this time i didnt even know i need a key to lower the spare tire. Needless to say i cant lower my spare tire with out this key. I went to 2 Ford Parts places and neither have the parts cause they are not made anymore. Checked out 2 junk yards, cant find one that actually had a key in the glove box...no surprise there. So now i am left with a spare tire under my truck i cant use. And the real kicker is, i am moving to DC in 2 weeks and would like it accessible if the unfortunate time arises. Any suggestions out there???? Can i get a key refabricated by a locksmith???

There should be a small piece of thick paper in your glove box with a serial number on, that should be your lock ID. If it's there just take that to your local dealership and they can order you a new key. NOt sure what else you could do.
And if your truck is like mine, the spare tire lock is like the wheel lock, each truck had a diffrent lock. Because of that checking junk yards would be a big long shot.

if you unbolt the guide tube for the spare tire crank, you can break the lock fitting off with a hammer. Then you will be able to lower your spare tire with just the crank provided uner your hood, and forget about the useless spare tire key, that just cakes itself full of dirt anyways.

removing the plastic tube can be easy, but unfortunately getting at the lock that is located on the winch can be extremely difficult to get at with the spare tire still in the store position. ive fought with a few of these for hours trying to remove the key, but found the least stressful... cut the cable and find a used winch somewhere and never put that darn key lock in ever again.

My suggestion would be a 4 1/2" angle grinder and safety glasses-just don't cut into the gas tank accidently...it could be a bit problematic....

For my 2006, the spare tire key is the same as the ignition key.

yes the 2004 and up have a actually key lock cylinder in the bumper which uses your ignition key, the key he is talking about is one for an older 97-03 vehicle with the "key" being a special socket device that needs fit over the part on the winch... which is hard to get at without that key

Well, i tried getting to the winch above the spare tire with a variety of tools...no such luck. So i brainstormed a little bit more and i ended up taking a socket with a somewhat tight fit over the key insert point and filled the socket with JB weld. Hopefully the socket adheres to the spot and i will be able to stick a 1/2" drive into the socket and lower the spare tire. I will keep you guys informed. Thanks for the help.

The JB weld held. I also ended up welding the 1/2" drive on to the crank bar. Works perfectly. I now have a spare tire.

do you mean the same crank bar that is used to work the jack?
does this mean that you now have a spare tire but no jack.

its the same crank bar that would be used to raise the jack...if i had one...the guy also took the jack when he brought the truck to the dealership. i found a new jack at fleet farm that doesnt need the crank

I took the tube off let the air out of the spare still unable to get the lock out I was able to get a hack-saw in there and cut the cable, after that I removed the winch and stuck the cable through the piece that holds the tire and used a cable clamp and winched it back up with no key. To lock the tire I used a cable and pad lock so if the clamp fails it has the cable to catch it and it would be difficult to steal

super duty F250, 05 I to have a spare tire problem, did not get a key or tool to let my spare tire down.
I have looked for a key lock on spare tire but found none. If anyone could give me advice on what to do I would appriecate it. Also, on
the keyless door pad, i have no main code number, but the truck does run good. Thanks,Jim

Same problem, bought used '03 f-150, no key. Used jonnyriabov's advice. (same as parts counter guy at dealership) Mine was easier as tire was already lowered. (had to get someone at a tire service center to lower) Unbolted winch to get better working position, removed guide tub, tapped lock to loosen,then popped out with hammer claw. Crank bar works fine w/out any key.

The spare tire key on Ford trucks is nothing more than an adapter in the original older Ford spare tire hoist. Ford will tell you there are 16 different key designs. Not all Ford dealers have the full key set to find out which one you have. I lowered my spare with a SEARS CRAFTSMAN stripped bolt head remover kit.

They work by screwing onto the bolt head in a reverse CC rotation which is perfect for this problem. You can get the set at Sears for about $20-30 bucks if you dont already have it(Great tool to have). They fit in standard sockets. You will need a long 3/8" extension to reach the key, or a few of them together. If you have a drill-to-3/8" adapter, just chuck up the extension in a 1/2" cordless drill, reverse drill direction(counter clockwise), push the bolt remover onto the key with a little pressure and the tire will drop in about 5 seconds! If not, just use a ratchet. Once it is down, pull off the plastic tube for the crank, use a flat screwdriver to pop off the key revealing a rectangular hole in the tire hoist. It is only held in with a spring clip. You can then either leave it off like I did, or take the key to Ford where they should be able to order the correct replacement. Replace the crank tube and your done. Also, if you dont have a factory crank kit you can use that same 3/8" extension to raise and lower the tire without any socket on the end of it. The extension will fit in the hole in the hoist by itself.

The spare tire mounting design used for a 2003 year is prone to rusting, key not working; a thus leaving you stranded with out being able to access your spare tire. I highly recommend that you check that yours is functional or remove locking system before it is too late.

jb weld works bang a socket on it and wait till the next day. my friend took a pair of vise grips and stuck his hand up and over to the lock and slowly lowered it enough too.

i just had a friend put his vise grips on lock and a long flat head srewdriver and a quick pull and tug and it came out. 10 mins....
