Only one side hurts after wisdom tooth extraction reddit

Hi guys,

I've had my wisdom teeth removed recently and I was after some advice.

In Feb I had two removed with no issues whatsoever. Just the usual 4-5 day recovery time and within 2 weeks I was fine. Unfortunately when the other two were removed this month, there was a bit of complication. I had them removed at OLGV by a dental surgeon. He was having difficulties with the bottom molar and they used a lot of local anesthetic with a fair bit of yanking. When I asked what had happened, they just said it was fine and told me to go home and take my pain killers as normal.

The anesthetic took ages to wear off and eventually I developed this hard swelling on the side of my face which makes swallowing and opening my mouth incredibly difficult. After a week of no improvement with my condition, I went back to see him and he looked at my extraction. This was last Tuesday and he said there was no infection. I was given a syringe and told to clean my mouth with some mouth wash (never wrote it down for me despite my insistence) and some sticks to use to force my mouth open.

The sticks were meant to be used for 30 mins, I can't force for more than 30 secs without immense pain. One of the assistants at Etos sorted me out with the right mouth-wash.

I've been doing the following to get rid of the swelling

  • warm water salt flushes a few times a day

  • rinsing my mouth with the mouth wash

  • ice in the first few days, warm compresses since then

  • bought arnica tablets and gel

Unfortunately nothing has worked so far and the swelling remains the same. I'm going to go get it checked out tomorrow to see if it is infected but assuming that it is not (as it was seen on Tuesday); I was wondering if any knowledgeable people on here would be able to give me any advice.

I've read about steroids for removing swelling, I've also been told that if a nerve was hit during the extraction, I could be like this for 3 months. One of the girls at De Tuinen told me that her friend had swelling for a year .... obviously I'm really worried about that prognosis and hoping that it's not going to be that bad!

So yesterday morning I had my Wisdom tooth extracted - it needed taken out.

The dentist gave me anesthesia and to cut a long story short after the dentist virtually yanked the bad tooth out and being told I should take paracetamol pretty soon when I get home before the anesthesia wears off... I still feel no pain 😂 more than 24 hrs later!!

Having heard and read horror stories to 'I was awake during the whole process and pain made me pass out' to 'I feel small pain and couldn't eat on that side of my mouth for 3 days'.

The only downside is the gum site is still healing so I'm careful to avoid the area.

How was your wisdom tooth extraction?

please call up your doctor and let him know that you are in pain. I've had all my wisdom taken out last month and I only felt slight pain after the anesthetic wore off. it was mostly gone the next morning and only hurt when i opened my mouth really wide.

eating & drinking - don't eat hot / warm stuff or anything with spices. either cool your food or eat something meant to be consumed cold like milkshakes, yogurt, buttermilk. add lots of full fat cream to your coffee, extra butter to your food etc to make sure you get more calories from lesser food for a few days if it hurts while chewing your food.

soups are good but again you need to cool them before eating.

i used to drink a tall glass of coffee or chocolate milk with 2-3 tablespoons of cream twice a day.

don't eat anything that will stick in your teeth (pizzas, pastas, sandwiches, candy) as you need to keep your mouth clean and brushing will be difficult when you are in pain. use a good mouthwash after every meal.

apply lots of ice twice or thrice a day - 30 mins each time with 5 min on / 2 min off pattern

get good sleep, you will heal faster.

Why does one tooth extraction hurt more than the other?

Pain in the adjacent tooth after third molar extraction can be caused by inflammatory reactions and pressure on this tooth. The pain caused by pressure on the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone results from the cytokines released by osteoclasts, which are responsible for bone destruction.

Why does the left side of my mouth hurt after wisdom teeth removal?

Dry socket It's where a blood clot fails to develop in the tooth socket, or if the blood clot becomes dislodged or disappears. This can happen 3 to 5 days after surgery. The empty socket causes an ache or throbbing pain in your gum or jaw, which can be intense like a toothache.
