Screen
Apple iPhone 13 Pro (Max): 6.1 and 6.7 inches, with ProMotion
The main difference between the iPhone 13 Pro (Max) and the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) is the ProMotion technology in the screen. When you scroll or play a game, the screen will refresh frequently at up to 120 times per second. As a result, animations look smoother and your iPhone feels faster. When you read a long text, the refresh rate gets lowered. That's easier on your eyes and better for your battery. The iPhone 13 Pro has a 6.1-inch screen and the iPhone 13 Pro Max a 6.7-inch screen.
Apple iPhone 12 Pro (Max): 6.1 and 6.7 inches, no ProMotion
The Apple iPhone 12 Pro (Max) has a 60Hz screen. That means scrolling and playing games won't look as smooth and you'll sometimes notice your phone slowing down. The screen is a Super Retina XDR OLED display, the same display as that of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Thanks to the OLED technology, black tones look truly black. That way, you can optimally enjoy your favorite series and movies. The screen size is the same as that of the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max.
Camera
Apple iPhone 13 Pro (Max): improved stabilization and Cinematic Mode
Both the iPhone 13 Pro and the 13 Pro Max have improved image stabilization. That means your videos look less jerky and your photos are less likely to turn out blurry. Since all 3 lenses have a larger sensor, photos you take in low light will be sharper and more colorful. Thanks to the Cinematic Mode, you can adjust what your camera focuses on while you record footage. Or you can simply adjust it afterwards. As a result, you can effortlessly record professional-looking videos. With the improved telephoto lens, you can also zoom in up to 3 times without quality loss.
Apple iPhone 12 Pro (Max): 3 cameras, no Cinematic Mode
The iPhone 12 Pro (Max) has 3 cameras and a LiDAR scanner that measures depth, just like the iPhone 13 Pro (Max). Only the iPhone 12 Pro Max uses the improved stabilization that you can also find on the iPhone 13 Pro (Max). The sensors in the cameras are slightly smaller. This results in less high-quality photos taken in low light. The iPhone 12 Pro (Max) doesn't have a Cinematic Mode. The telephoto lenses aren't as good either. The iPhone 12 Pro Max lets you zoom in up to 2.5 times, the iPhone 12 Pro up to 2 times.
Speed and battery
iPhone 13 Pro (Max): A15 Bionic chip, larger battery
The latest and fastest processor from Apple is called the A15 Bionic chip and can only be found in the iPhone 13 Pro (Max). With it, even the most demanding games and apps run smoothly. The processor and the screen are both more energy-efficient. As a result, the battery of the iPhone 13 Pro lasts 1.5 hours longer than that of the iPhone 12 Pro. The battery of the iPhone 13 Pro Max even lasts 2.5 hours longer than that of the iPhone 12 Pro Max. That means you can easily go through your day without recharging it.
iPhone 12 Pro (Max): A14 Bionic chip, smaller battery
The A14 Bionic chip in the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) isn't the fastest anymore, but it's still very powerful. You can only notice the difference compared to the A15 processor with the latest and most demanding apps. The battery of both the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max is smaller than that of the new devices. With the iPhone 12 Pro (Max), you'll generally still make it to the end of the day without having to recharge it.
Design and version
iPhone 13 Pro (Max): up to 1TB storage, smaller notch
With the iPhone 13 Pro (Max), you can choose between 4 colors and 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage. The 1TB storage version is new. This amount of storage space is useful if you're constantly making high-quality photos and videos and want to download entire seasons of your favorite series. When it comes to design, the iPhone 13 Pro Max looks very similar to the iPhone 12 Pro (Max). The notch at the top of the screen is 20% smaller, so you have more screen space.
iPhone 12 Pro (Max): up to 512GB storage
The biggest change in design for the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) was the look of the sides. This was the first time the devices has a flat, glossy edge, so the iPhone 12 (Pro Max) looks a bit more angular than its predecessors. You can choose between 4 colors and 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB storage. The 1TB storage version is only available for the iPhone 13 Pro (Max).
Conclusion
The iPhone 13 Pro (Max) mainly stands out thanks to the new screen with variable refresh rate. It also has improved cameras that allow you to take better photos in low light. In addition, the battery lasts a lot longer and it's the first device that's available with a 1TB storage capacity.
