In 2021, Apple decided to launch its iPhone 13 smartphone with 5G connectivity. Users who turn on their phone for the first time and activate mobile data will automatically get a 5G connection.

Although this is the ideal scenario for those who live in areas with great 5G connections, not everyone can get the same signal and may have to switch back to 4G so they can surf the net on their phone.

Despite how new and revolutionary 5G is, it will still take some time for it to become available worldwide. In the United States alone, only a couple of states have the 5G towers, while the rural areas still can't get the connectivity.

If you live in the suburbs, reverting back to 4G may be a better idea. Luckily, switching the connection back to 4G is fast and easy. Here's how to do it.

To switch to 4G, go to Settings and select "Mobile." Next, tap on "Mobile Data Options." If you have a dual SIM, you need to choose the SIM you want to make changes for.

Tap on "Voice and Data," and select 4G. If you have an LTE connection, you will see it in the list, and you can tap on it too.

As soon as you select 4G or LTE, the 5G connection will be disabled automatically since iPhone 13 can only use one mobile network, according to 9to5Mac.

A stronger 4G or LTE signal is better than a weak 5G signal because a stronger connection prevents your signal quality from dropping when you need it.

Most mobile games encourage players to use 5G because it is a decent connection that can eliminate lag. However, if the 4G signal is stronger in your area, then you can use that instead when playing.

Why is 5G Highly Recommended?

Phone networks use 5G radio frequencies that ride over the spectrum to send data. However, 5G networks can run on any frequency, including the short-range ones.

The 5G network is built using three different bands of the spectrum: low-band, mid-band, and high-band. In the United States, most areas use a low-band spectrum, but mobile networks use the combination of mid-band and high-band spectrum.

A 5G-compatible phone is ideal for gamers who use their cellular data more than their Wi-Fi when playing.

According to Verizon, 5G connectivity can give users a faster and more responsive online experience. iPhone 13 users can download movies or TV shows faster, and they'll experience less lag while video chatting or streaming videos.

Apple has made sure that its iPhone 13 series is 5G-compatible. From iPhone 13 mini to iPhone 13 Pro Max, all members of this series support 5G.

Android Authority reported that there are 17 states in the US with strong 5G connectivity. Some of them are California, Arizona, Florida, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, and Ohio.

Last year, Apple introduced the world’s smallest 5G smartphone. And in 2021, that strategy continued with the company's 2021 iPhone lineup. That's true; all four models from the iPhone 13 lineup have support for 5G, now working on a broader range of networks. With that said, you'll want to know how to turn ON/OFF 5G on your iPhone 13 – and we're here to explain precisely that.

Tip

The instructions you’ll find below apply to all iPhone 13 models. However, they also apply to any 5G-capable iPhone running iOS 15 – which currently includes the entire iPhone 12 generation as well.

How to Disable 5G on Your iPhone 13

Since 5G comes automatically enabled on your iPhone 13 (if you meet the requirements of using it, that is), you’ll want to know how to disable it. So, here are the steps to turn off 5G on your iPhone 13.

1. Navigate to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options

2. Now, tap on the 'Voice & Data' option.

3. At this moment, you should see three options available on your screen.

4. To disable 5G on your iPhone, make sure to tap on 'LTE.'

5. Close the Settings app and continue using your iPhone like you normally would.

Tip

As you can see, there’s no 'OFF' switch for 5G. Instead, you can only select a different type of Web connection, which is 4G/LTE in this case (which comes with slower but still fast-enough Web speeds and give you 20% better battery life).

How to Enable 5G on Your iPhone 13

Once you decide to enable 5G on your iPhone, you’ll have a couple of options available. So, here are the steps to turn on 5G on your iPhone 13.

1. Navigate to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options

2. Make sure to select the 'Voice & Data' option.

3. Now, identify the following options on your screen: '5G On' and '5G Auto.'

4. Pick '5G Auto' to allow your iPhone to use 5G only when needed (it’ll use 4G as well).

5. Go with '5G On' to force your iPhone to use 5G all the time (affecting its battery life).

Tip

If you want our advice, know that Apple's smartphones do a magnificent job of switching between 5G and 4G when needed. By doing so, your Web-related needs will be met while your iPhone gets to preserve its battery life. So, go with '5G Auto.'

5G Data Modes: Don’t Forget to Optimize 5G on Your iPhone 13!

Aside from choosing whether to use 5G all the time or when needed only, you can also optimize your phone’s behavior on 5G networks. So, do the following.

1. Navigate to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options

2. Now, select 'Data mode.' You should see three options on your screen.

3. To use FaceTime or stream video in the highest resolution, pick 'Allow More Data on 5G.'

4. To cut down on the video streaming quality, pick 'Standard.'

5. And to prevent background tasks and save data, pick 'Low Data Mode.'
