Alolan Golem-GX, despite being of a different form than most other Golem cards, followed the same general guidelines as any other. Big numbers for both damage and HP along with high Energy requirements and a high Retreat Cost was the norm. There was actually some acceleration for Lightning as a type, as awkward as running a second Stage 2 or having access to a way better Basic Pokemon was. Hard to completely discount 200 damage despite all the other issues, though, especially on a type that actually had things going for it.
250 HP was high, and you’d need all of it since Alolan Golem-GX’s main attack had recoil. One hit sent that down to 200 and 2 got it all the way to 150, so this wasn’t as sturdy as you’d think. If using in BKT-On with Vikavolt as the acceleration, you’d have to watch out for that Fighting Weakness, as a single bit of recoil made it easy for something like Lycanroc-GX to come in as an attacker for a clean KO. The Metal Resistance, however, didn’t tend to mean much. 4 Energy was far too high to pay for, so you’d be unlikely to retreat this Pokemon without some help. This usually meant Float Stone or Switch in BKT-On or running Zeraora-GX in SUM-On which was far easier and worked with more than just Alolan Golem-GX.
Hammer In was a standard 80 damage for a Lightning and 2 Colorless Energy. It was rather weak for what the cost was, and wasn’t useful outside of getting a KO on a weakened Pokemon.
Super Electromagnetic Tackle hit very hard. 200 damage was no joke, even if 2 Lightning and 2 Colorless Energy was a good bit to ask. You’d want to be using this with either Vikavolt or Pikachu & Zekrom-GX for the acceleration, though there was plenty of competition for this sort of thing, especially in the more reliable SUM-On format where you could use Raichu & Alolan Raichu-GX as a big attacker. The recoil of 50 damage was something to note as well, as it could quickly cut into Alolan Golem-GX’s bulk and make it a lot less sturdy than you’d expect. The goal would be to get a favorable Prize trade, which typically meant getting multiple hits in before falling to an opponent’s attack. This was easier said than done.
Heavy Rock GX was not nearly as strong, and 100 damage for 4 Energy didn’t sound worth the GX attack. Then you’d look at the effect, which was to prevent the opponent from playing any cards at all from their hand during their next turn, and sometimes it would simply be the best possible option to stall for a turn. It was certainly nice to have in the right spot.
Alolan Golem-GX hit hard and could lock things down for a single turn. The downsides of being an Energy-intensive Stage 2 GX that also damaged itself when attacking were quite notable, and the result was one of those Pokemon that saw little play but also had to be taken seriously in battle. 200 damage along with, at least later on, access to Electropower meant very little was safe against it. The competition from Rayquaza-GX and the Tag Teams did make it hard to actually want to build around this, but we’re talking about a Golem card here. Finding a Golem that was even this good was hard enough, so fans of the Pokemon at least had something to work with for once.
