How much fish oil to take reddit

Hey everybody!

So I don‘t really understand the guidelines for the recommended daily-intake of omega 3´s and wondered if someone could shed light on this.

I read: the recommended intake of Alpha-Linolenic (the Omega 3 in Most plant sources) is 1,3g, but this gets transformed in the body to EPA and DHA. But the „conversion rate“ of the body is not so high. And the daily recommendation of DHA and EPA is around 250-300mg.

I take algae-supplements and they have 585mg total Omega3s of which DHA are 340 and EPA are 200mg.

It’s about a third of the recommended daily intake when you take the total omega 3, but it has so much „straight available“ DHA and EPA. So could you say it covers the daily need or not?

I think it´s a bit weird because just a tablespoon of hemp- or rapeseed-Oil covers the need „total omega 3 wise“ - kinda weird when a omega 3 supplement does not.

Or is both, so DHA/EPA and Alpha-Linolenacid equally important/you have to see it as different nutrients with different daily recommandations or could the body theoretically function perfectly if it never had Alpha-Linolenacid and only direct DHA/EPA through algae/supplements/fish?

Thanks a lot for any insight!

I have been taking about 12g of fish oil a day. This a 33% EPA 22% DHA mixture. I was wondering what is the consensus on this level of dosing. After the disappearance of Isochroma no one else seems to be taking doses this high, aside from the AD studies.

Have any of you taken doses this high for an extended period of time? Have any of you had negative experiences from dosing this high?

I am not talking about intolerance. Someone who cannot tolerate 5g of fish oil most likely cannot offer much information for this level of useage.

I see people out there just taking in massive amounts of fish oil regularly.

I've never had to take just large amounts to feel the benefits. It's hit or miss with me, but I can say that 80% of the time my joints/body feels better after one standard pill, and 90% of the time after two.

If I don't get results from that dosage, for me personally, I don't seem to feel better regardless of the amount I take.

Took one this morning before the gym. Just got home and have sore joints with the weather, the rolls etc.

Will take another now that I ate.

I will probably feel better once I do take a second dose, but if I don't, I'll suck it up.

I take Nordic Naturals triglyceride omega personally, which is extremely high quality as well as having high bio-availability and supplement that with phospholipid DHA occasionally and have good results without having to chug the stuff.

There's a podcast with Joe Rogan and Dr. Rhonda Patrick out there where she goes into great detail about the differences etc.

But my "real world" opinion... I take 1 or 2 and feel noticeably better (less joint ache) 90% of the time.

I currently take nature made 1200mg fish oil that has 360mg of EPA and 240mg of DHA. I take 4 pills daily. I am using it for depression and would like to try to get the EPA over 1000mg or even to 2000mg if needed. Is it safe if I start to take 6-8 pills spaced out threw out the day to get the EPA and DHA In the 1-2 gram ballpark?

Companies sell fish oil that has a high EPA to DHA ratio. If you buy that type, you should not need to take as many capsules.

You might be seeing increased bruising from the amount you are currently taking.

Hey thanks I’ll look into that!

I started taking Krill oil and I love it! I switched from fish oil. It’s more expensive though...

level 2

Yes going closer to the source reduces the chance of contaminants and heavy metals it might contain. Krill is better. It will also have astaxanthin which is a powerful antioxidant in itself. The con is the cost

level 2

I’ll take a look, thanks!

Fish oil always a contiminated one , not at all safe i would say, switch to algae

level 2

I think the good brands having processes to keep it safer for consumption.

I’ll definitely check that out, thanks

I personally take 4g of fish oil (2g EPA/1g DHA) a day. I have been going up to 10g (5g EPA/2,5g DHA) a day for weeks but I notticed no additional benefits so I went back down to 4g and stayed there since.

level 2

What effect do you notice from 4g?

level 1

Make sure it's TG/Triglyceride form. 4 to 6 grams daily, in two doses. Costco has this or go with Nutrigold, Garden of Life or Nordic Naturals.

level 2

I’ll check that out, thanks

It can also increase you LDL cholesterol depending on the ratio of fats.

That dose is fine. However, if you take blood thinners or other supps that can cause thinning (ie: Ginkgo, Turmeric), then you need to do an INR test.

I'd switch to Nordic naturals, slightly more expensive but you'd be taking far less pills and wouldn't have to ingest as much "empty" fish oil. I've heard too much fish oil can increase your chances of having a stroke. Overall the quality is a big step up. I think I pay $20-25 for a month supply of oil in a bottle. Pill form might be slightly more expensive. The taste is actually pretty good too.

level 2

Thanks I’ll definitely check that out

Two things:

  1. Be sure your fish oil has been screened for, and contains no, heavy metals.

  2. If you are on blood thinners or have a clotting disorder, this is a question for your doctor.

Personally, I take 3000mg EPA / 2000mg DHA, daily, and have for 7-8 years. I’ve had no negative effect. My triglyceride levels on my last blood test were excellent.

Does anyone know if Möllers is screened and cleaned?

Thanks for the help! And good to hear you had good success with it!

Do you have a specific brand you recommend?

Is 1000mg fish oil enough per day?

To maintain a healthy heart, be sure you're getting enough EPA and DHA. Up to 1,000 mg of total EPA and DHA per day is recommended for people who have coronary heart disease and are at risk of having a heart attack ( 24 , 25 ).

Is 1000mg of Omega

So, how much Omega-3 per day should you consume? Many doctors often recommend 1000 to 1200 mg of fish oil, because that amount of fish oil contains the total amount of Omega-3s the doctor wants you to consume.

How much fish oil should I take daily?

There have been some recommendations for certain types of fish oil, including DHA and EPA. The reference daily intake (RDI) of DHA and EPA is 250 to 500 milligrams.

Is 2000 mg of fish oil enough?

Fish Oil Dosage Matters Research has consistently shown that at least 2000 mg of EPA/DHA daily may be necessary for anti-inflammatory effects (7, 8, 9). Similarly, scientists have estimated that the average American adult needs 2000 mg of EPA/DHA daily to reach a healthy omega-3 index level (10).
