Applying for an instructional position

Instructional Application Process

Instructional positions are identified as teachers, school counselors, librarians, instructional assistants, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech pathologists.

Items to Gather Before Beginning Your Application

  • Educational history

  • Employment history (dates, contact info.)

  • Transcripts

  • Resume, cover letter, copy of teaching license, and other supporting documents

Step 1:  Search for Instructional Positions

  • Go to Instructional Job Opportunities to search for jobs

  • Select a school year to view instructional opportunities

Step 2:  Confirm you are qualified in the area(s) which you are interested

  • All applicants chosen for employment with Fairfax County Public Schools must meet the Virginia Department of Education’s licensure requirements.  By the contract start date for the position you are chosen, you must have or be eligible for a Virginia license.

  • For instructional assistant and substitute positions: All applicants must meet the qualifications as indicated under the job details.

Step 3:  Apply Online

  • After viewing the descriptions and qualifications of the job, click apply to job.

    • New applicants will need to create a login and complete the application.

    • Returning applicants will need to log in using their email address and password. If you need help logging in, please contact our Client Services Office at //hrconnection.fcps.edu.

  • Please remember to upload/attach your cover letter, resume, and any other required documents before submitting your application for consideration.

Step 4:  Be Proactive and Stay Connected

  • After you apply for a position, you will receive an email confirming your application has been received.

  • At any time, you will be able to log in to the system using the email and password you created to apply for new jobs and review the status of the position(s) for which you applied.

Retirees are able to apply online to be a substitute teacher or a substitute instructional assistant through the FCPS Instructional Talent Gateway.

When applying to be a substitute teacher, please have the following document ready to upload.

  • Former FCPS teachers who have retired (separated from FCPS) within the past three years with an FCPS performance evaluation reflecting “effective” or “highly effective” do not need to submit a letter of reference.
  • Former FCPS teachers who retired more than three years ago or separated from FCPS with a performance evaluation reflecting “developing/needs improvement” or “ineffective” need to submit one letter of reference from their most recent employer signed and dated within the last twelve months.

To expedite your application, please have all documents ready when you submit your application.

Onboarding Portal and Background Check

After completing the application process, you will be emailed employment information regarding our online onboarding system. This streamlined onboarding process will allow for expedited processing of employee information. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, employees will be able to complete forms, view required FCPS training and more from any Internet connection. After completing the onboarding, please call the Substitute Office at 571-423-3030 (option 1) so that we can confirm that it is complete. However, to meet state requirements, you will have to come in for fingerprinting and a criminal background check

When you come in to be fingerprinted you must bring all of the following documents:

  • Two forms of identification
  • A negative TB screening, test or a chest x-ray results dated within the last 12 months signed by a physician
  • I-9 documents

Applicants who arrive without all the required documents will not be processed.
