Walmart Credit Card Review: Decent Rewards for Frequent Walmart Customers

If you shop regularly at Walmart, you may want to consider either the Walmart store card or the Walmart Mastercard. Both cards earn the same rewards, but the Walmart Mastercard can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

Those without good credit may only be able to qualify for the store credit card, which means you’ll only be able to use it at Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Murphy USA gas stations — but it can still be a good option if you do a lot of shopping at Walmart.com.

Walmart Credit Card Benefits

Both the Walmart Mastercard and the Walmart store card have the same basic rewards and benefits, although the Mastercard comes with added versatility.

Signup Bonus

When you apply for either Walmart credit card, you get a $25 statement credit if you make at least $75 in purchases either in store or on Walmart.com on the day of account opening. Cash advances, gift card sales, money orders, and gas purchases don’t count.

Walmart Credit Card Rewards

Both Walmart cards provide you with the same rewards: 3% cash back on all Walmart.com purchases (includes grocery pickup purchases); 2% cash back on Walmart gas and at Murphy USA gas stations; and 1% back on all other purchases, including in-store Walmart purchases and anywhere else Mastercard is accepted.

Although this rewards program isn’t all that generous unless you shop at Walmart.com often, the big benefit is that cash back rewards are issued automatically as a statement credit once per month. Many other store cards require you to redeem your rewards for “money” that can only be spent in the store.

Other Perks

Some other Walmart credit card perks include:

  • No annual fee
  • $0 fraud liability
  • Free access to your FICO score
  • Special financing offers

Downsides of the Walmart Credit Card

The Walmart card also has some big downsides, including:

  • Lackluster rewards compared to other cash back cards
  • Store card can only be used at Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Murphy USA gas stations
  • Walmart Mastercard is a bit harder to get approved for
  • No 0% introductory interest rate
  • 3% foreign transaction fee

How It Compares to Similar Cards

The Walmart card issued by Synchrony Bank is an OK card for those who shop often at Walmart.com, but other cash back cards can provide you with the chance to earn more rewards.

Walmart Credit Card vs. Amazon Store Card

The Amazon store card provides some benefits the Walmart store card doesn’t — but at a higher price.

For example, although both the Walmart and Amazon store card charge no annual fee, the Amazon card offers 5% cash back at Amazon.com compared to 3% cash back at Walmart.com or 1% cash back at Walmart stores. Unfortunately, Prime membership is required to get that 5% cash back rate.

Both the Amazon store card and Walmart store cards are restrictive in where they can be used (at Amazon or Walmart only, respectively). However, both provide access to promotional financing as well as free FICO scores. Although the Walmart card offers a very small signup bonus (a $25 statement credit for new cardholders who spend $75 the first day), the Amazon card offers no signup bonus at all.

Ultimately, the right card for you will depend on whether you prefer to shop at Amazon or Walmart.

Walmart Mastercard vs. Capital One SavorOne Card

Although both the Walmart Mastercard and Capital One SavorOne can be used almost anywhere, the cards themselves are very different. The Capital One card provides unlimited 3% cash back on dining and entertainment; 2% cash back at grocery stores; and 1% cash back on all other purchases. That means if you shop at Walmart stores rather than online, you could earn the same cash back — or even more — depending on how Walmart classifies your purchase.

Capital One’s bonus for new cardmembers is also much more generous than the Walmart Mastercard, although you have to spend more to get it. You can receive a $150 bonus as a new Capital One cardholder but have to spend $500 on purchases within three months of opening your card.

Both cards come with no annual fee, but the Capital One SavorOne provides an introductory 0% APR for 15 months, whereas the Walmart Mastercard has no such promotional offer.

Unless you regularly shop at Walmart.com, the SavorOne is likely the better choice thanks to the low intro APR, higher signup bonus, and more flexible rewards — if you can qualify.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Get Cash Back on a Walmart Credit Card?

Both the Walmart store card and Walmart Mastercard let cardholders get up to $100 Quick Cash in $20 increments when making a purchase at Walmart registers. You’re limited to one cash advance per day, and the transaction will appear on your monthly statement like a purchase.

Can I Use My Walmart Credit Card Anywhere?

No. You can use your Walmart store card only at participating Walmart stores in the United States. This includes Walmart.com; Walmart stores (including Walmart supercenters and Walmart neighborhood markets); Sam’s Club stores; and Murphy USA gas stations. The Walmart Mastercard, on the other hand, can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

Can I Use My Walmart Credit Card Without the Card?

You can use your Walmart credit card account if you don’t have the physical card available as long as the information is saved in your Walmart mobile app or you have a temporary card number.

Bottom Line

Regular Walmart.com shoppers should apply now to start earning rewards on the spending you already do. The Walmart store card is especially good for building credit, so long as you maintain an on-time payment history as reported to the three major credit bureaus. But if you want a more versatile cash back card or rewards credit card that offers more flexible redemption options — or if Target is your discount retailer of choice — you may want to look elsewhere.

Can you get cash back with credit card at Walmart?

No, you can't use your credit card for cash back at stores; this is a transaction generally reserved for debit cards and, in fact, is only possible at some stores even then. In general, you'll want to use a debit card for cash back, whether via a transaction at an eligible store or through an ATM withdrawal.

Can I get cash back on my Walmart Capital One card?

Rewards: The Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard earns 5% cash back at Walmart.com; 5% cash back on store purchases for the first year with the store's mobile wallet, Walmart Pay, then 2% thereafter; 2% back on dining and travel; and 1% back on all other eligible purchases.
