Do You Need a Golf Cart?
If you love to play golf and prefer to ride than walk, then a golf cart is a good choice for you. It is usually preferred by senior players.
You need to take into account the initial cash outlay, performance, operating and maintenance costs, noise, emissions, local and state laws when buying a golf cart. Aside from these, you should also consider some important features like windshields, radio, seat materials, rear seats, extra seats, horn, mirror, and headlights.
Can You Use Your Own Golf Cart?
There are golf clubs that allow their members to bring their own carts. But not all golf clubs allow that. You need to check with your golf club about their regulation on using a personal golf cart. If they do allow, they usually charge trail fees for that.
Who Can Drive a Golf Cart?
Depending on each state law, a golf cart can be generally driven by people who are 13 years old and above. Driving laws vary per state. You should familiarize yourself with pertinent laws such as who can drive, when they can be driven, insurance requirements, speed limitations, and registration requirements.
Buy vs Rent
If you play golf regularly, meaning you play around 4 times a week, then you will be able to save money in the long run. Expect to pay $2,000 per year for trail fees. Compare it to renting, you will pay a cart fee of around $20 per person.
As the golf cart is yours, you can also personalize it in any way you want to suit your personality. You can even add custom seats or a stereo.
New vs Used
You can opt to buy a new or a used golf cart. If money is not an issue, then buying a new one is a better choice because you will be able to keep your maintenance costs at a minimum. A new golf cart costs around double the price of a used one.
Gas vs Electric
Performance
Electric golf carts used to have more difficulty in traversing steep slopes but newer models are built with better performance. They can run up to 5 horsepower (HP). Compared to gas golf carts that can run up to 12 HP, they are less powerful and slower.
But 5 HP is already enough if you intend to use them in the golf course only. I say this because there are other people who buy golf carts not for using it in the golf course but for transporting passengers in airports, hospitals, malls, etc. Gas golf carts are more suitable for these types of purposes.
Pollution
One of the advantages of electric golf carts is that they do not emit pollution. Gas powered golf carts emit pollution which may be annoying to sensitive golfers. Seniors should limit their exposure to pollution to avoid health risks.
Maintenance
Electric golf carts are powered by batteries that you recharge. You need to replace batteries every 5 years so they are
more costly to maintain. A new battery costs around $200. You also need to make sure that the water level is adequate.
Noise
Gas golf carts tend to be noisier while in operation. Although newer models have lessened the noise, they are still not as quiet as the electric ones.
Operating Costs
In terms of operating costs, they depend on the market prices of gas and electricity in your area. But, gas is generally more expensive than electricity.
