Best way to get rid of frizzy hair

Whether your hair is curly or straight, long or short, color-treated or virgin, there’s presumably one thing we all have in common: frizz. Truthfully, frizzy hair is almost unavoidable—but the secret is knowing how to deal with it.

I’ve spoken to numerous celebrity stylists and colorists in search of the best frizzy hair treatments, tricks, and products, and below, I’ll be sharing how to get rid of frizzy hair—or at least tame it—once and for all.

Here are 12 tips to remain calm, cool, and collected for when your hair is just not cooperating.

1. Hydration, hydration, hydration.

For many women, the root cause of frizzy hair is simply a lack of hydration. One way to hydrate your tresses is by adding coconut oil into your routine. Moisturizing and soothing to the scalp, coconut oil is a fantastic—and relatively inexpensive—way to tame frizz naturally.

After you shampoo and condition your hair, apply coconut oil to your ends. You can also apply a little bit of oil to your roots, but if your hair is prone to grease, skip the scalp area.

For manageable and less frizzy hair, apply coconut oil every other week for the first few months. Then increase to weekly treatments.

2. Give an overnight hair mask a try.

When your hair is in dire need of intense hydration, opt for an overnight mask. While there are plenty of great products to choose from, I love Ouai’s Treatment Masque, as well as Sachajuan’s Overnight Hair Repair.

Pro tip: Sleep with a shower cap on, use a pillowcase you don’t care about, or layer a towel over your pillow.

3. Always use heat protectant products.

Blasting your hair with a hot blowdryer, hair iron, or curling wand can not only cause damage to your strands—it can also cause serious frizz.

Be sure to incorporate a heat protectant into your regular routine before blow drying, straightening, or curling your hair.

The product will leave a lightweight coating on your tresses—a protective barrier, if you will.

I love Bumble & Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer, because it gives me an added layer of heat protection, and also leaves my hair feeling silky without weighing it down.

It’s become such a staple in my routine, I now can’t imagine doing my hair without it.

4. Use a hydrating shampoo.

I tend to overhaul my everyday beauty products for summer, since the change in weather can effect both my skin and my hair. I switch up my skincare routine, start using sweatproof makeup products, and also change my shampoo.

Since your locks tend to be especially dry once the whether gets warm, avoid shampoos that contain high alcohol content which can dehydrate your hair.

Opt for a moisturizing option that’s packed with protein and oil to replenish your locks instead. This frizzy hair shampoo has great reviews and an accompanying conditioner that adds softness and shine.

You also might want to consider using a detox shampoo once a week to remove product build-up. (There are a handful of clarifying shampoos for damaged hair that I recommend.)

5. Use a styling cream.

While you might think that a styling cream is too greasy or heavy, there are actually a lot of lightweight options out there for more fine hair. Some styling creams can even be applied to dry hair to help smooth, tame, and de-frizz.

I’ve been loving this Color Wow One-Minute Transformation Styling Cream, which is specifically designed for second-day hair, poofy post-workout hair, color-treated hair, and over-processed hair.

I wrote a full review on this styling cream, but I’ll let the before and after photos speak for themselves.

6. Blow dry your hair properly.

It can be tempting to rush through the boring blowdrying process, but sticking to a proper technique can help limit frizz in the first place.

After you wash your hair, use your hands and hair dryer to soak up the majority of moisture.

Then, use a paddle brush to smooth your hair as you point the dryer down from your roots toward your ends. This will close and seal your hair cuticles, limiting frizz.

The Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer is an investment, but all of my girlfriends with extremely thick, frizzy hair swear that it’s changed their lives.

7. A little hairspray goes a long way.

For instant results after you’re done styling, apply hairspray to frizzy areas.

The best way to avoid the dreaded “crunchy helmet-head” look is by applying the hairspray onto your brush, rather than directly onto your head.

Or better yet—spray it onto an unused toothbrush or mascara wand to tame frizz instantly.

8. Tame flyaways by accessorizing.

Sometimes, no matter what precautions you take, a little frizziness is inevitable. One fool-proof way to tame your flyaways? Accessories.

From headbands and shiny barrettes to 90s-inspired scrunchies and simple bobby pins, there are cute accessories that will help tame your hair while keeping you looking chic.

9. Minimize the amount of times you wash your hair.

Many stylists will advise that over-washing your hair can leave it dehydrated and prone to frizziness. When you wash your hair too often, you not only strip it of natural minerals and proteins, but you also produce excess oil.

So, if possible, stretch the amount of time you can go in between shampoos.

While there isn’t a specific number of times per week that experts recommend, it’s typically best not to wash your hair on back-to-back days.

If you’re used to shampooing daily, start small: try switching to every other day initially, and then increase to every two days.

10. Dry shampoo is a LIFESAVER.

If you’re like me, going for long periods of time without washing my hair requires a little help. That’s where dry shampoo comes in.

On those mornings you wake up with slightly oily roots, a dry shampoo will do wonders.

My favorites include Batiste (or the “brilliant blonde” version if you’re a blonde), Living Proof Perfect Hair Day, and Detox Dry Shampoo by DRYBAR. Spray a little on your roots to totally revamp greasy-looking hair.

11. Invest in a silk pillowcase.

You shouldn’t only invest in a silk pillowcase because it looks fancy AF. Silk pillowcases also offer benefits to your hair that other cotton pillowcases do not.

Silk pillowcases will maintain your hair’s moisture, whereas others may tug at your roots and create friction that will result in frizz.

This one from Amazon comes in 28 colors and has over 2,500 five star reviews. The best part? It’s only $24.

12. Get rid of your harsh cotton towel.

Ditch your cotton towel and upgrade to a towel made of microfiber instead. A microfiber towel (like this one by Devacurl) is extremely gentle on your strands and helps tame frizz, as well as prevent static.

Particularly great for curly girls, Devacurl says to “apply a styler and scrunch wet curls upward for frizz-free definition and decreased drying time.”

If you don’t have curly hair, this Aquis water-absorbing hair towel is a great option. I started using one a month ago and was blown away by how much if reduced my frizz, and the fact that it literally cut my blowdrying time in half.

13. Try anti-frizz sheets—or even dryer sheets.

For particularly humid days, run an anti-frizz sheet over freshly styled hair to tame frizz and flyaways. Another lesser-known hack you can use in a pinch? Try doing the same with a dryer sheet.

Can you get rid of frizzy hair?

The best way to keep your hair frizz-free is to lock in moisture right after you shower by combing a leave-in treatment through your hair. Look for products containing oils and silicons, which build a barrier on the hair, helping to keep the moisture in the air from getting under the cuticle.

Why is my hair frizzing so much?

There are four primary factors that cause frizz: the environment, diameter of the hair fiber itself, level of curl, and the amount of damage. Avoid long and hot showers, excess exfoliation, and hot tools like traditional hairdryers and flat irons to prevent frizz.
